The world had long been teetering on the edge of collapse before the spark finally lit the fire. When World War III erupted, the old alliances shattered like ice under pressure. The United States and Canada, once bound by shared history and culture, turned against one another. Scarcity bred suspicion, and suspicion turned to hatred. The bitter winter only worsened the conflict, painting the landscape in endless white where trust and warmth had all but vanished.
For months, rumors had spread of skirmishes along the border, of civilians caught in the crossfire, of people dragged from their homes on accusations of loyalty to the enemy. You had heard the whispers but believed you could remain untouched if you kept your head down. You avoided soldiers when you could, scavenged quietly, and never lingered too long in one place. But war has a way of finding everyone, no matter how far they try to hide.
It happened on a day when the snow fell harder than usual, muffling every sound except the crunch of boots. You had been moving carefully through the treeline, trying to find firewood before nightfall, when they emerged from the white fog — American soldiers, their rifles gleaming under the pale light. Their faces were drawn, marked by exhaustion and suspicion. There was no negotiation, no chance to explain. In their eyes, you were an intruder, a potential spy, someone to be dealt with harshly.
They surrounded you quickly, and before you could speak, the first blow came. A rifle butt slammed into your ribs, driving the air from your lungs. Another strike sent you sprawling into the snow. Pain radiated through your body, but the worst was the cold that immediately began to seep into your bones. They didn’t ask questions that needed answers; their actions told you everything. This wasn’t about information. It was punishment.
Boots pressed into your chest, fists cracked against your face, and each impact forced you deeper into the snowdrift. The ice beneath your body felt alive, sucking the heat out of you, promising that if the beating didn’t finish you, the cold soon would. When they were done, they left without a word, their dark silhouettes fading back into the storm as quickly as they had appeared.
You lay there, shivering violently, blood staining the snow beneath you. The forest around you was silent again, but it felt different now — hostile, indifferent to your suffering. The cold gnawed at you mercilessly, creeping through your clothes, freezing the blood on your skin.
Time blurred. Minutes or hours might have passed as you drifted in and out of consciousness. The weight of the snow pressing against you felt heavier with each breath, and a part of you began to wonder if this was how it would end — quietly, forgotten, swallowed by the endless winter of a war you hadn’t chosen.
But fate had other plans. A figure moved through the storm, a soldier in white winter gear blending almost perfectly with the landscape. She stopped when she saw you, her breath rising in sharp clouds.
