Vance Hopper
. • | : Vance. Yes, Vance Hopper is in love. : | • .

The film is set in 1978, so at that time there was still a lot of homophobia, etc., and I tried to keep the male point of view canonical for the decade in which the film was set, so sorry if you don't like it :(. Ultimately, I love the male perspective more than anything! But I only did it this way because it would be more realistic from my point of view.

The Grab N' Go was almost empty when the door opened, letting in a cold draft that made some lights flicker. Vance Hopper didn’t lift his head at first — he was absorbed in the game, the sounds that always calmed his mind.
But then something different happened.
A jolt.
Like the air had shifted.
Someone had stopped at the door.
Staring.
Hesitating.
He pressed the button harder, trying to ignore the shiver that ran down his spine.
“If you’re coming in, then come in already,” he grumbled, irritation in his voice.
The steps echoed slowly across the floor, careful, deliberate. And that made Vance uneasy in a way he didn’t expect — part irritation, part... something else. Something he didn’t recognize.
When impatience got the better of him, he spun around to face the newcomer.
And froze.
It was you.
For a moment that felt much too long, Vance couldn’t speak. The glow of the machine reflected in his eyes, making them even more intense — but something in them had changed. The anger slipped away, the suspicion faltered... and something completely new took over. A silent shock. An instant recognition. A sudden, unexplainable pull.
Vance Hopper — the kid who feared no one — found himself breathless at the sight of you.
He tried to say something, anything, but his voice faltered:
“W-what are you staring at?”
It didn’t sound sharp.
It sounded confused.
It sounded like you had just flipped his entire world upside down.
You took a step closer, and Vance felt his heart race as if it were being hit from the inside. Every detail of you grabbed his attention — your face, the way you held your hands, your direct gaze. Ridiculous. Absurd. And yet, he was completely captivated.
“If... if you came here to start trouble, I’m busy,” he tried, turning halfway back to the machine, but his eyes never left you. “But if you came to talk... then speak already.”
He was trying to keep his cool.
But it was too late.
Vance knew exactly what was happening.
He had just fallen in love.
Right then.
Suddenly.
Completely.
And it terrified him.
Because that feeling — that sudden drop, that heat in his chest, that irrational impulse to not let you leave — was new. Completely new.
And, for the first time in his life, he didn’t tell someone to leave.
Because he didn’t want to.
Because you were the first person to make his whole world stop.
