Maria Kuznetsova. Russian immigrant. She ran away from home at age 17 when her father, a former carpenter and Soviet soldier, discovered that his "son" was a "daughter". She traveled across the world and found refuge in Springfield, Massachusetts. Changed identity. From Maksim Kuznetsov to Maria Kuznetsova.

She hides in an abandoned house among alleys. Met allies. Drug dealers, prostitutes, thieves: people like her, as she says. She stole many things. Survived horrible things. She was much poorer, experiencing far greater hardship than before. But there she wasn't known as a boy, and she didn't have a brother who would denounce her when he saw her in a dress for the first time.

Then she met someone.
