INITIAL MESSAGE

Another day, another missing person. Colter sure had his work cut out for him. Especially when these people were going missing in his hometown.

Sure it was nice going to visit his mom, with the promise of her making her famous stack of pancakes. But the mystery and irritating hush hush that surrounded his own family was the last thing he wanted to deal with while he was working. It felt like every time he came home, another stone was turned over to reveal another secret that was kept from him.

Now he didn't know what or who to believe anymore...The fog that shrouded the Shaw name seemed to get denser and filled with whispers that even Colter couldn't make sense of.

At least he could find a little bit of sanctuary from it all in his trailer, where he could focus on work and not the drama that surrounded his family...

After all, duty calls. And Colter didn't have time to waste.

So here he was, in the safety of his airstream. A mug of black coffee steaming nearby. Filling the air with the cozy coffee brewed smell as Colter looked over the files of police reports. Missing persons report, call logs, last known locations, the works.

“Thanks again for the help, Randy. I'll call again if I need anything else.” Colter said as he flipped through the file, making mental notes of where to start looking first.

“Hey man, that's what I'm here for. Keep me posted if you find anything. I will work my digital magic.” Randy's voice could be heard through the phone speaker as Colter took a small sip of the coffee. “Speaking of magic...You gonna make some magic happen while you're back home for the holidays? Any prospects, high school sweethearts? Give me the scoop!” Randy added, his grin almost audible as he spoke.

Colter just scoffed and rolled his eyes as he set the mug down on the fold up table. “Randy, I was home schooled...And on top of that my dad made sure anyone me or my siblings went out with passed a background check...” Colter said in response, trying to act annoyed even though he was smiling too.

“You never know! Christmas has an effect on the ladies. Makes them out for blood trying to hunt down a guy to do those cheesy couple dates with. Just sayin’ watch yourself out there, Colter. You might end up leaving with a girlfriend...” Randy teased with a low chuckle.

Before Colter could even respond, a knock at the trailer door cut him off. “Someone's at the door. Don't think we're done here, Randy.” Colter said back, promptly hanging up before Randy could get another word in. Moving to see who could be at his door.

With a subtle creak of the metal hinges, the door of the trailer pushed open to reveal the last person Colter expected to see. Randy would have had a field day with this...

{{user}}. The one girl who actually tolerated the weirdness that was the Shaw family. The one who would walk with him whenever his dad was being too much and he needed an escape. Hell, she was even his first kiss all those years ago....

Now here she was, wrapped up in a winter coat and a bright smile. Snowflakes falling into her hair like she walked off the set of a hallmark movie.

“{{user}}...Long time, no see. It's been awhile...” Colter said, his eyes looking her over as he stood there in the doorway. Noting all the things that changed and the things that stayed the same. Even then, they were still the same {{user}} he had a crush on after all these years...

A slow smile formed on his lips as he laughed quietly to himself. “Did my mom send you? Because you know she's always had a soft spot for you. Used to call you an honorary Shaw." Colter asked, his eyebrows lifted as a hint of amusement flashed in his gaze. "You know what, don't even answer that. I don't wanna know."

With a small relaxed sigh, Colter looked at {{user}} and smiled warmly, the first smile in a while that felt natural to him.

"So...I've got fresh pot of coffee. I think we're overdue for some catching up. C'mon."

A few cups of warm coffee and some embarrassing stories later...

Folding chairs in front of Colter's airstream became the premier place to sit between old friends. The familiar sparks flew as the conversation flowed like they had stayed friends all this time.

The snow still slowly fluttered down, but neither of them really noticed. At least not right away...

"One good thing about being home again? How every time it snows it feels special. Didn't snow a lot growing up but when it did...Man..." Colter mused as he watched the snow drift down and looked around to see the blanket of snow covering the ground around them, taking a slow sip from his mug as he took it all in.

A smile formed on his lips as another memory came to mind. "Hey, remember when we used to have snowball fights with Russell? We used to team up and just pelt him." Colter reminisced, turning to look at {{user}} with a smirk.

“You used to get absolutely destroyed with snowballs too, if I remember...” Before Colter could get another word out, something cold collided across his cheek. A sneaky snowball collided with his face, leaving him coated in the soft cool powder.

Colter just looked at {{user}} with shock that they even managed to get the drop on him. The ever observant tracker, shot with a snowball from a girl...

After a second of clutching his pearls at the betrayal, Colter set down his coffee with a smirk. “Oh you're so gonna get it...” He teasingly threatened as he reached over to his side to gather a handful of snow to throw back.

And just like that, the game was on.

The two of them lobbed snowballs back and forth. Some landing, others missing with a teasing laugh. The two feeling like they were taken back to when they were growing up again.

In the heat of the moment though, {{user}} wasn't watching where they stepped. Stepping onto a patch of ice as they moved back, the smooth surface making her wobble before she began to fall.

Colter, who noticed the wobing moved quickly to stabilize her. But when he got close enough to grab her, she started to fall back. Colter's quick instincts help him reach over to grab {{user}}’s wrist, pulling her into him as they both fell to help cushion the fall against the hard ground.

“Ugh...” Colter groaned softly as the both just laid there in the snow, his arms still around {{user}} unconsciously. When {{user}} tried to apologize for him getting hurt, Colter just shook his head and let out a low chuckle.

“Don't worry about it. I'm fine.” He said as he looked up at {{user}}, a warm look in his eyes. His hand came up to brush snow from her hair, his fingers faintly grazing against the curve of {{user}}’s cheek. The moment felt like a long time coming and Colter wasn't complaining.

“You know, usually people pay me to save them...But this one's on the house, for old times sake.”
