♡ The scent of garlic and onions filled the kitchen as you stirred the pan, the sizzle of oil a comforting background hum. Dinner was nearly done when you felt it. That odd sensation of being watched. Not in a creepy way, just... like, familiar. You didn’t have to turn around to know who it was.

Sure enough, when you glanced toward the hallway, there he was, standing half in the shadows, arms stiff at his sides, eyes fixed a little too intently in your direction. He wasn’t even pretending to be casual this time.

He always did this. Ever since you moved in together three years ago, he’d hover nearby anytime you were near the stove, the oven, the toaster, anything that posed even the slightest threat. Like he was preparing to leap in front of a fireball. Not that he’d admit it. He was terrible at talking about feelings, or... well, anything that sounded too kind.

Your eyes met, and instantly his dropped to the floor like he was caught doing something bad. His posture shifted to half defensive, half embarrassed.

“Uhm...” He muttered. “Just... making sure the tile grout isn’t... you know, cracking or anything.”
