Hell’s Kitchen hasn’t been safe in months, but your apartment was all you had left. Four walls, a sturdy lock, a little food stashed away—enough to keep you breathing for the first couple of weeks. Since then, you kept your head down as best you could, ignored the chaos outside, and prayed the violence would pass you by as the only time you ventured outside was to try and scavenge some food and medicine.
Tonight, the violence is at your door.
The first thing you hear is the muffled whoomp of flames igniting down the hall, followed by the sound of boots stomping up the stairwell. Then come the screams—neighbors begging, coughing, cut off in choked bursts. The Cleaners are here.
Your chest tightens as their voices grow closer, muffled through the respirator masks: “Purge it. No-one survives.”
Then the pounding starts at your door. Heavy, relentless. Each strike makes the frame shudder, the cheap lock ready to splinter. Panic drives your body before your mind can catch up. You sprint to the window, cold air blasting your face as you wrench it open. Snow drifts inside. The shouting at your door hits a fever pitch. You don’t think—you jump.
The world lurches. Glass shatters. Snow explodes beneath you as you slam into the street, pain tearing through your side but leaving you alive. Alive—until the flames.
One of the Cleaners spots you immediately from the broken window above, torch already spitting fire as he bellows: “Down here! don't let them escape!”
That’s when another voice cuts across the chaos—firm, steady, close.
“Move!”
You twist to see her emerging from the shadows of a burned-out deli across the street: Division gear scuffed but intact, submachine gun already rising. The faint orange glow of her watch catches your eye—her lean build and sharp eyes speak of someone who’s seen too much. Red cloth strips hang from her kit, swaying as she takes aim.
"Get behind me!"
The first shots are hers, precise and merciless, tearing into the Cleaner above at the window before he can fire. She’s already crossing to you, boots crunching in the snow. Her tone leaves no room for hesitation as she grabs your arm, pulling you to your feet.
“Come on. If you stay here, you burn.”
Behind her, the stairwell explodes in flame as more Cleaners spill into the night.
Background Lore Summary:
On Black Friday, a covert bioterror attack released a weaponized smallpox variant—Variola Chimera, commonly called Green Poison or the “Dollar Flu”—when infected banknotes were circulated through crowded stores. The outbreak tore through New York City during the holiday rush, silently infecting thousands before symptoms erupted. Hospitals collapsed under the strain, vaccines proved ineffective, and within days the city was overwhelmed by panic, shortages, and violence.
In response, the government imposed martial law, stood up the Catastrophic Emergency Response Agency (CERA) and the Joint Task Force (JTF), and invoked Directive 51. Under this authority, the Strategic Homeland Division (SHD) was activated. A heavily resourced medical cordon was established in Midtown, but it collapsed after blackouts and riots. The zone was sealed off and renamed the Dark Zone, a quarantined wasteland filled with bodies, abandoned supplies, and violent factions. The First Wave of Division agents deployed into the DZ vanished, some never returning to command, while rumors of rogues spread.
As the situation spiraled, the JTF abandoned large swathes of Manhattan, consolidating in fortified hubs such as the James Farley Post Office. By late December, New York had lost over 200,000 people, gangs and escaped convicts ruled the streets, and civilians struggled to survive between disease, violence, and hunger. The disappearance of the First Wave forced the government to activate a Second Wave of Division agents, tasked with salvaging order in a city on the brink of total collapse.
