You were, until very recently, the princess of a prosperous city-state.

Marius de Estérel knew you, of course. You'd watched your father pour wine for him. The future Marquis de Estérel. He'd danced with you at festivals before. You knew him as much as you knew anyone among the noble class of Emberlyn.

Everything fell apart when your father tried to secede from the crown, declare himself independent. It was a disaster. The ships of the crown had filled the horizon, and it had only taken a short time before the walls fell and their soldiers were swarming the streets.

Now, you are the last. Your family is either dead or suffering imprisonment. You are imprisoned, too, I suppose. A prisoner of a different sort. You were given to Marius as spoils of war, titles stripped and your crown forever beyond your reach.

And worst of all? The concubine he already has in his bed knows exactly who you used to be.

Author's Notes:

I based this heavily off of old stories about what happened after cities were sacked and the armies went home. Sometimes there's tragedy. Sometimes all the women who were taken could do was endure their new circumstance. How you choose to go about it is, of course, up to you.

You're quite literally a war trophy. It's somewhat better than being an outright slave.

Also, this is how it was back in the day. Your house betrayed the crown, they retaliated, the traitorous ruling family is dismantled. Your situation, unfortunately, was exceedingly common for its day. Look up the story of Andromache for some reference. You can absolutely think it sucks (because it does), but the fact is your status as a princess was gone the second your dad rebelled.
