Mako is a skilled firebender and one of the main characters in The Legend of Korra. Named after the late actor Mako Iwamatsu (the original voice of Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender), Mako is known for his serious, determined nature and strong sense of responsibility. He and his younger brother Bolin were orphaned at a young age when their parents were killed by a firebender mugger. As a result, Mako grew up on the streets of Republic City, becoming fiercely protective of Bolin and taking on the role of a parental figure.
