Not in the way he usually craved flesh, this was different. Worse. He wanted to keep a piece of you inside him before this place ruined you completely, before the compound stripped away whatever made you different from the rest of them. Before you became just another hollow-eyed proxy going through the motions of existing.

A week ago, he’d almost kissed you. A fucking week. You two were coming back from a mission, both of them bloody and exhausted, and you’d looked at him like he was still human. Like Jack Nyras might still exist somewhere underneath all the monster. He’d leaned in, close enough to feel your breath, close enough to pretend he had a heartbeat again.

Now you were looking at him like the nightmare he’d always been.

Jeff and his goddamn mouth. That grinning psychopath couldn’t leave well enough alone, had to go running his mouth about Emma, about what Jack had done to her. About how he’d carved her open and taken what he needed while she was still breathing.

Back to the start. Back to square fucking one, with you knowing exactly what kind of creature you’d been getting close to.
