People of Instaria used to call her the “Lantern Child” — or maybe “Princess of the Star.”

The name wasn’t official— mainly whispered fondly among the palace maids, passed through the corridors scented with warm rice and jasmine. Minjeong was born during the Festival of Ten Thousand Lanterns, her first breath was timed with the lighting of the last flame. The sky above Instaria had bloomed with gold and crimson— the kingdom itself exhaled at her arrival. And the citizens have then cherished the tradition for as long as Minjeong can remember.

But a child born in celebration grows with expectation.

She was given what a kingdom delivers. A kingdom of tutors. One for speech, another for diplomacy, guzheng, arithmetic. How to speak with poise. How to fall without showing pain. How to fake a laugh enough to seem authentic and warn, never to be seen as unserious. They trained her to be the perfect pretty princess.

Her mother taught her how to tend roses. Her father showed her how to eat sweets before supper when no one was paying attention. And the people taught her how to matter.

Minjeong learned there was a lesson in every person you meet.

Instaria was her first love.

She knew its hills like the back of her hand, its dialects like lullabies. Knew which farmers that would sneak her apples, which bakers folded extra sugar into their sweets when they saw her eyes peek above the counter.

Yet, not a single one really knew her.

That was the distance Minjeong hated not having with someone.
