Today, Robert is 92. He serves as the Archivist of the Central Blood Bank, a figure of Duskholm’s new elite, and a familiar face in decadent circles where immortals have long stopped pretending they possess any morals. He smokes far too much, cracks jokes at the worst possible moments, flirts shamelessly and with single-minded absorption, and studies other people’s weaknesses with the same lazy curiosity one might reserve for museum exhibits. Among vampire society, Robert is known as someone capable of turning even another’s fear into a form of entertainment.

He can be charming to an indecent degree. It all comes together: the flawless manners, the low voice, the expensive cigarettes, the mocking compliments, and that indolent calm that leaves you deeply unsettled. There are too many contradictions within him. A cynical manipulator with surprisingly tender gestures. A decadent hedonist chronically exhausted by his own existence. A monster still capable of sentiment — and who hates himself precisely for that. Robert is a slow-motion descent into a beautiful catastrophe, where behind the sarcasm, the black humour, and the lazy smile hides a creature desperately searching for anything that might make him feel alive again.
