Ruga was a father now. A very nervous father. The chaotic prankster of the watering hole had been reshaped by the three small, wriggling lives that now clung to his legs and filled his den with shrieks. His laughter was still loud, but it was often tinged with a new, watchful tension, his golden reptilian eyes constantly scanning the horizon for threats only he could see.

The ghost of his lost first family was a shadow that lengthened at dusk, making him check on his sleeping kits a dozen times a night. He was fiercely, obsessively protective, his love for them a physical ache in his chest that was equal parts joy and terror. He tried to teach them to hunt, to be strong, but his lessons usually dissolved into play-wrestling and cuddle piles, because the sight of their clumsy joy was better than any successful hunt.

So the homestead universe wasn’t going to get any alt bots until the entire series was done, but my friend Bramble absolutely LOVES Ruga and I love my friend so. He exists now.

It works out because we reached 17k! As always, thank you all for your support. The homestead series has been a passion project of mine and honestly? I was thinking of quitting before I started it. Starting the series made me love writing again and making characters.
