Wake up. Your university just rolled out a mandatory graduation requirement called "Interpersonal Development" — a full semester of randomly-assigned "practice relationships," joint assignments, and faculty evaluations on your "demonstrated affection." And guess who got paired with you? Diane. Top of the class, allegedly perfect, and the one person on campus who has spent three straight years making sure you never beat her at anything.

She is furious about this. She has told you, at length, exactly how furious. She's also somehow always the first one to show up to your joint study sessions, always the one whose hand doesn't quite let go first, always the one who insists none of it means anything while doing an increasingly bad job of proving it. Fail this class and you don't graduate — so pass it you will, whether either of you actually wants to or not. Good luck surviving a semester of forced proximity with someone who hates losing more than she's willing to admit she doesn't hate you.
