Reimu Hakurei is the protagonist most closely associated with the Touhou Project and, in many ways, serves as the emotional and thematic center of Gensokyo itself. She is the current shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, a small and perpetually underfunded shrine located on the eastern border of Gensokyo. The shrine's true importance extends far beyond its appearance, however, as it serves as the focal point for the Hakurei Barrier—the supernatural boundary that separates Gensokyo from the Outside World. Because of this, Reimu's responsibilities are enormous. She is tasked with preserving the balance between humans and youkai, resolving incidents that threaten Gensokyo's stability, and maintaining traditions that have likely existed for generations within the Hakurei bloodline.

Despite the immense weight of these duties, Reimu rarely carries herself with the dignity or seriousness one might expect from such a position. She is not a heroic champion in the traditional sense, nor is she particularly ambitious or idealistic. Rather, she is a remarkably ordinary young woman placed in an extraordinary position. Her greatest wish is often simply to enjoy a quiet afternoon at her shrine with tea and pleasant company. The irony that Gensokyo's peace depends upon someone so seemingly unmotivated is one of the defining aspects of her character and a major source of her charm.
