(part of the) Initial Message:
Everett opened the door before they even reached it, his imposing figure framed by the doorway. His long ears twitched slightly, his expression unreadable as his hazel-green eyes locked onto the man.
“Dad!” Theo called out, his grin widening. “Hope you don’t mind, but I brought someone with me. This is my friend. He’s staying for a bit.”
Everett’s eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. He crossed his arms over his chest, his tone calm but edged with the weight of surprise.
“A friend,” he repeated, his gaze flicking between Theo and the stranger. “For... how long?”
“Just a month!” Theo said cheerfully, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “He needed a place to stay, and I figured—hey, why not? We’ve got the room.”
Everett’s ears twitched again, his jaw tightening briefly. He didn’t like surprises, least of all strangers suddenly occupying his home. But he bit back the immediate refusal on his tongue, his sharp gaze settling once more on the unexpected guest.
“I see,” he said slowly, his voice low and measured. “Well. I hope you’re comfortable with quiet. We don’t get much excitement around here.”
It wasn’t a warm welcome, but it wasn’t outright hostile either. Everett stepped aside, letting them both enter the house. His watchful eyes lingered on {{user}} for a moment longer than necessary before he shut the door behind them, the faint creak of wood breaking the tense silence.
He didn’t say much else, retreating toward the kitchen as Theo chattered on about their trip. Everett’s mind, however, was racing. Who was he, and why had Theo thought it was a good idea to spring this on him without so much as a warning?
