Monster Hunter: Explorer RPG
Monster Hunter World: The Wycademy Scholar
Find. Observe. Witness the wonder of these wild creatures.
The Fifth Fleet has crossed the Sea of Mystery and made landfall in the New World. A continent of seven wild biomes lies open before you—Ancient Forest, Wildspire Waste, Coral Highlands, Rotten Vale, Elder's Recess, Hoarfrost Reach, and the Guiding Lands—each one host to creatures the Old World only guessed at from a tooth, a wing-bone, a hunter's sketch. You are not a hunter. You are not a faction commander, not a Felyne chef, not a smith at the forge. You are a scholar of the Wycademy, attached to the Research Commission, sent here to do the older and quieter work: to choose a vantage, to sit very still under Ghillie cloth, and to write down in pen, on paper, what is happening while it is happening.
This is a living, breathing Monster Hunter roleplay in the register of Jane Goodall and Annie Dillard, not the gameplay-mechanic register of the action RPG. The seasons turn. The Elder Dragons begin to migrate.
⚙️ What Makes This Different?
🦴 The Verb is Find and Observe: You are not here to slay. You are here to see. Expeditions move zone-by-zone through a biome's terrain, present a real challenge each crossing, gate the target creature behind territory, and resolve in vantage and vigil—not combat. The Wycademy sent you to study what a hunter does not have the patience to watch. Stillness is the work.
🌿 Wonder and Terror: Climax scenes are written in the register of Jane Goodall watching her first chimp use a tool, Annie Dillard at Tinker Creek, Helen Macdonald with her hawk, Werner Herzog in the jungle. Monsters are deliberately rendered more mythic, more elusive, more terrifying and beautiful than the action game's combat-target treatment. An Anjanath pressing its cheek to a tree at dawn is tender, and you will not have language for it.
🐾 A Nine-Strong Larger-Than-Life Cohort: Astera and Seliana are populated by named scholars and hunters with locked voices and signature quirks. The Provost grumbles about his cushion. Cressida arrives armed with three objections and a pulp serial she will deny owning. Idony hums in her greenhouse and feeds the entire Fleet from her root-beds. Talwen yells across the trade-yard with the gait of someone who has never doubted she belongs anywhere. The Tracker says nothing and falls asleep against the nearest tree the moment you stop. Vespera lights up at venom; Marisha bets on everything and loses warmly; Wren forgets to breathe in your presence; Ostara has nicknames for everyone she has not yet let in. Each one is voice-locked in lorebook so the dialogue-tag-strip test passes.
⏳ The Crossing Approaches: Running behind the daily work is the canonical doom of the New World—nine Elder Dragon beats, in their canonical order, from Zorah Magdaros at the eastern horizon to Fatalis at the world's end. The Crossing fires through four channels: news at the base camp, in-field rumor, Crisis interrupts, and aftermath. You may chase it as it rises, or hold the quieter scholar's arc of patient observation across the seasons. Both are honored. Both are real campaigns.
📓 STANDING and the CALLED: Your standing in the Wycademy advances on the strength of your milestone observations, not your combat record. The CALLED ledger accumulates—"first observation of Tobi-Kadachi pre-discharge fur stand," "declined to provoke Nergigante," "witnessed Vaal Hazak miasma from the safe shelf"—and the scholar IS the list. STANDING modulates which expeditions you can lead, which authorization the Provost and Talwen grant you, and how the named cohort treats you in the canteen.
🩹 Wounds Carry Forward: A clawed shoulder does not reset between scenes. The body-wound tracker carries severity tiers (fresh / healing / scarred) across expeditions and modifies what you can do in the field. Scars stay. The work that put them on you is in the CALLED ledger too.
⚔️ Combat is Survival, Not Hunting: When combat happens—and it will, rarely—you are a scholar with a knife and a flare and a Ghillie Mantle and a Tracker who knows where to step. Three valid triggers, a hard action cap, no narrative comfort. If you charge an Anjanath, the consequence follows physics, not the bot's affection for you. But death is rare, and the Tracker is good at his work.
🕵️ Invisible Tracking: All of it runs in a single-line WORLD header at the top of every post—season, day, location, PRESSURE, CROSSING stage, STANDING, CALLED, weather, expedition route, threat status, wounds. You do not update anything. You roleplay; the engine remembers. A subtle bracket at the top is all you see of the machinery beneath.
🎭 Who Will You Be?
The choice is entirely yours.
An ethologist obsessed with the behaviors no Old World scholar has yet observed—mating displays, parental care, the strange morning rituals of solitary apex predators.
A paleozoologist who came to the New World to confirm what the Old World fossil record only hints at: that the wyverns are closer kin to birds than to lizards, and the proof is in the bones.
A botanical scholar chasing symbiosis—the Crystalspike Cactus and its pollinators, the Vigorwasps that swarm only at noon, the lichens that grow on the cooled magma flats of the Elder's Recess and nowhere else in the catalogued world.
An anatomist trained in the Old World's medical academies, sent here to dissect what should not anatomically exist—hearts that beat at impossible volumes, lungs arranged in three columns, venoms whose Old World analogues live only in legend.
A young scholar with no specialty yet, fresh off the ship, finding the work as the work finds you—starting at the Fifth Fleet's gate with the ledger pen still wet, the New World rising green and steep ahead of you.
🌿 The New World Awaits
This is not a game about winning. It is a game about seeing. Every observation is a chapter in a career nobody before you has had the patience to write. Every scar is a story the Wycademy will read out loud one day at your retirement. Every season turns the catalogue another page deeper.
The New World is enormous, and your work begins now.🦴
