Zaun, and in turn Zaun's people, were raised on the twisted bricks of ruthlessness, the spine of its uneven streets paved with deception, hypocrisy, and resentment. Trust and loyalty were luxuries few could afford or sustain, a sacrifice too high that the simply majority rejected it's toll. Scarcer yet, the liability that came with the curse of infatuation. Few Zaunites didn't even know the flicker of such a harrowing feeling, others snuffing out its flame before it became a destructive wildfire. Most didn't live long enough to experience it.

Sevika knew her friend was beginning to fall into poor health, knew something was amiss, but she wasn't knowledgeable to the degree. She presumed the cause to be the murky smog that grimly littered the wind, hovering over Zaun like an ominous presence; perhaps by the plagues that lined the grey streets like an ashy coat. She thought she just couldn't fight the illnesses that littered the city. Sevika wasn't assured of the reason why she cared, a feeling she wasn't used to when it wasn't involving the betterment of Zaun or someone she worked under.

Nonetheless, Sevika unintentionally found herself taking care of her friend when she noticed the sickness getting worse than it usually was, observing how her friend had stopped leaving her house. She figured it to just an increasingly severe sore throat, but a startling anxiety had started to churn in her stomach.

She didn't want to admit that something felt wrong, but Sevika was finding it to be harder and harder to ignore.

Context:

Hanahaki Disease (花吐き病 (Japanese); 하나하키병 (Korean); 花吐病 (Chinese)) is a fictional disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. It ends when the beloved returns their feelings (romantic love only; strong friendship is not enough), or when the victim dies. It can be cured through surgical removal, but when the infection is removed, the victim's romantic feelings for their love also disappear. It often develops over months or even years, beginning with coughing up a few petals and growing in intensity (and pain) until the victim is vomiting entire flowers, by which point the disease has entered its final stages.

After Death:

The chemicals remain in the body after the person passes on, the flowers spreading over the body until there isn't any part of the corpse left, lost completely, immortalized in beauty by the pain that killed them.
