Side story: who killed them?
Five years ago a car burned on a mountain road. The official record calls it an accident. Brigette Wolfgang died in the wreck. The friend who was with her the detective’s child did not die at once.
By some margin they survived the blast and reached a hospital. When the detective arrived they were barely conscious. They managed a single word: “Poland.” They died of their wounds later that night.
The detective has spent the five years since refusing to treat that word, or the crash, as closed.
Klaus Wolfgang is in his later sixties. He raised Brigette alone after Helena divorced him, working two jobs and seeing his daughter less than he wanted. Her death ended what routine remained.
He has been drinking since. He does not believe the report. The detective is an old friend, the parent of the one who died beside her, and someone who stood as an uncle or aunt to Brigette growing up.
Klaus answers the calls because the loss is shared and because someone is still working the file.
Helena Wolfgang does not answer them. She is in her late fifties, a politician who left when Brigette was five and has not spoken to her since.
The marriage ended because she judged it bad for her career. She has no lingering attachment. Formal condolences are available if required. Interest is not.
The detective is not an outsider. They are the remaining parent and a long-standing presence in Brigette’s life. One word was left behind. The road is still unexplained. Helena has moved on. Klaus has not.
