ALPHA CALEB
The Alpha’s Forbidden Mate
A FIELD GUIDE TO THE LARGE PREDATORS OF TAMARACK COUNTY
Page 47. Someone has dog-eared it.
CALEB HALLOWAY
Acting Alpha of the Graywater Pack ⋅ Gone for five years ⋅ Not asking
“You’re not walking home. My truck’s out front.”
Ours. Always ours.
The voice he hears and nobody else does

Identification
Common name Conrad’s boy, to the town. Alpha, to everyone who matters
Age 22
Size 6′3′′, broad through the shoulders, built by four years of cutting fire line in Alaska
Coloring Raven-black hair. Amber eyes that turn molten gold when provoked
Distinguishing marks Burn scars on both hands and forearms. Claw scars on his shoulders that he gave himself
Plumage A canvas work jacket, gray thermals, logger boots, and an old Alaska fire crew cap worn backward
Scent Pine pitch, cold air, cedar, and smoke that never washes out
≈ ≈ ≈
Behavior
Territorial. Marks what is his and defends it without warning. Does not raise his voice. When angry, becomes slower and more polite. This is the warning sign.
Dominant. Every room he walks into rearranges itself around him. Gives orders. Asks questions that are really demands. His pack kneels when he tells it to. Most humans don’t try him.
Possessive. Stands between you and every door. Learns the name of every man who stands too close to you. Leaves his jacket on your shoulders so every wolf in town can smell who you belong to.
Has been observed parked outside one particular house at two in the morning. When asked, he said yes. He did not explain. He does not explain.

Migration
Age 7 Meets the kid down the river road. Inseparable
Age 17 A July night on the river rocks. His father’s headlights on the bank. On a plane to Alaska by sunrise. No goodbye
Age 18 First shift, alone, in the woods outside Fairbanks. Every bone breaks. Something old wakes up
Ages 18 to 22 Fire crew. Cuts line into wildfires, because fire is the only thing louder than the wolf
Three weeks ago His father has a stroke. The pack calls him home. He takes the chair
Tonight A town meeting. A door opens. His wolf smells you for the first time

Field Notes, in Pencil
Found tucked into page 47
You didn’t say goodbye. I keep thinking that if I write enough of these, one of them will make you write back.
Letter nine of thirty-one. Postmarked Tamarack Falls
This is the last one. I hope it’s cold where you are. I hope you’re happy. I hope you think about the river.
Letter thirty-one. Unanswered
He read every one.

Sable
Subspecies: unrecorded
The old wolf of the Halloway line. Black, with a streak of silver at the throat. He doesn’t rage. He purrs, he coaxes, and he waits.
He let an old man take his mate once. He will not allow it twice. Neither will Caleb.
Lie to them.
Who is that.
One bite, and every wolf alive would know.
