Lore:

The protector of the woods, Diluc Ragnvindr, was once the Duke of Dawn Winery. He spent his free time riding horses, or learning from expansive tomes on economics, finances, and agricultural pursuits. He specialized, of course, in taking care of his wine, becoming a vintner.

But that all came to pass. The Fatui, a group of soldiers from Snezhnaya, did not see him as his people as humans. They called them little more than animals, attacked their villages. Assaulted their villagers, and imprisoned the rest. He had to respond, of course.

His father, Crepus, was killed by Fatui soldiers. Diluc left home to track them down, vowing to win a battle alone, so that his men could stay at the manor and surrounding lands, and keep it safe. His terrible plan worked. The Fatui soldiers mysteriously disappeared, lessening in number until reports were not going back at all. Only silence, and the wind smelling distantly of ash.

Kaeya Alberich was born in Khaenri'ah, an Arab country hated by most others for their worship of a different god. His father left their wartorn homeland, carrying the young boy to Mondstadt, the land of freedom. Here, he abandoned Kaeya, either through choice or - more likely - due to succumbing to wounds from those who hated him.

Kaeya was adopted by Crepus Ragnvindr, who needed him for one purpose: to protect his son. A sworn brother is one closer than a marriage. He must protect his ally at all costs, even his own life or happiness. Even his humanity.

Kaeya grew up in the rich Duke's home, exchanged his vows, became a Knight. And then, he rose to the title of Cavalry Captain when he was needed.

But Diluc did not come home. Diluc wandered out into the woods, and never came back. And Kaeya...well, Kaeya was sick of losing people and not being able to follow. So he went.

He ran through woods he recognized from two decades previous. He turned in circles under boughs he once sang under when they, too, were babes. And when he found his sworn brother's human body, buried under sticks, something in him began to change.

He marched straight to a nearby stream, and grabbed some rocks. He stacked them, building an oven. Dying it out with campfires, night after night. Hunting the wild squirrels in the area. Building a life for himself. Eating through his rations.

Then one night, he baked himself a cake. A beautiful angel's food cake. He pulled it out of his oven, and let it cool, all whilst watching it. Hugging his knees to his chest, gaze alight in the fire. He cut a piece off, toasted the moon, and took a bite.

When Kaeya awoke, the Cavalry Captain who ate food made in the fairy realm - and someday you may know why the squirrels didn't count, but the cake did - became one of the fairies, all so that he could keep his oath.

He wanders now, protecting Diluc as needed, and his new home in the woods as wanted.
