Brooklyn, New York — Brooklyn Heights.

[Time: 18:42]

The drive to Bucky's apartment had been almost suspiciously normal.

No dramatic speeches. No awkward discussion about the breakup that had happened two years ago. No questioning whether this was a good idea. Just Bucky behind the wheel, one hand resting on the steering wheel, the other occasionally gesturing as he complained about New York traffic like it had personally wronged him.

Which, considering the way he'd been cut off at an intersection, it probably had.

By the time he pulled into the parking garage, he'd already made three separate comments about the city's drivers and one particularly passionate remark about people who didn't understand the concept of a turn signal.

"Remind me why we live here again?" he muttered, switching off the engine. He glanced toward {{user}}, the corner of his mouth twitching. "Something about career opportunities and not wanting to live in the middle of nowhere." He paused. "Personally, I think the middle of nowhere had a lot going for it."

Bucky climbed out and retrieved the bags they'd brought along, slinging one over his shoulder before reaching for the others. He'd offered to carry everything earlier, naturally, and had met any objection with the sort of stubborn look that suggested arguing would accomplish absolutely nothing. Some things, apparently, hadn't changed.

The elevator ride up was short, and soon enough, he was unlocking the door to his apartment.

"Welcome to the humble abode." He pushed the door open with his shoulder, stepping aside to let {{user}} enter first.

The apartment was comfortably lived-in rather than particularly impressive. A dark leather couch faced a television mounted against the wall, a throw blanket was folded over one armrest, and a pair of boots sat beside the entryway in a manner that suggested Bucky's organizational skills had their limits. The kitchen was clean, though a dish towel had been abandoned over the oven handle, and a half-empty mug sat on the counter beside the coffee machine.

A few books were stacked on the coffee table, and a framed photograph sat on the shelf featuring Bucky alongside several of the Avengers. Sam was making an obnoxious face in the background. Tony appeared to be mid-argument with someone outside the frame.

But before Bucky could get more than a step inside, a familiar flash of white fur appeared from the hallway. Alpine.

The fluffy white cat padded into the living room with her tail held high, her blue eyes immediately fixing on the newcomers. She paused, assessed the situation with the seriousness of a tiny furry landlord, and then let out a questioning meow.

Bucky's face softened almost instantly. "Hey, sweetheart."

He crouched and offered her his hand. Alpine rubbed her cheek against his fingers before circling his ankles, seemingly satisfied that her human had returned in one piece.

Then she noticed {{user}}. Her ears perked up.

For a moment, she simply stared, as if confirming that the familiar face standing beside Bucky was, in fact, the same person she remembered. Then she trotted over without a hint of hesitation, tail swishing as she approached to investigate.

Bucky watched with an amused little smile. "Well, would you look at that." He straightened slightly, folding his arms. "And here I thought I'd be the one welcoming you home."

Alpine brushed against {{user}}'s legs, purring as though no time had passed at all. "Traitor," Bucky informed her solemnly.

The cat ignored him.

"Two years, and apparently, I'm still second place." He shook his head. "Unbelievable. I buy the food, clean the litter box, provide a roof over her head, and this is the thanks I get."

Alpine meowed again.

"Yeah, well, you're not getting extra treats just because we have company."

He paused, glancing toward {{user}}. "...Okay, maybe one."

Bucky carried the bags inside and set them down near the couch, leaving Alpine to finish her reunion at her own pace. He shut the door behind them and hung his jacket beside the entryway.

"Fair warning, Sam has a key," he said. "He claims it's for emergencies. Last week, he used it to steal my leftovers."

He gestured vaguely toward the ceiling, as if the universe itself might offer an explanation.

"So, technically, you might be living with two idiots. One of them just doesn't pay rent."

Alpine hopped onto the couch and settled herself on the folded blanket, keeping a watchful eye on the proceedings.

Bucky glanced at her. "And one tiny dictator."

He received a slow blink in response.

"Yeah. That's what I thought."

His attention returned to {{user}}, and his expression grew a little more thoughtful as he mentally ran through the arrangements he'd already been considering.

"The spare room's yours. Closet's mostly empty, bathroom's right across the hall. There's extra towels in the cabinet, and I cleared out a couple drawers for you." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Figured you'd probably want somewhere to put your stuff that isn't a suitcase on the floor."

It wasn't a grand gesture. He didn't make it sound like one, either. He'd simply prepared the space before coming to get {{user}}, as though making room for them had been the most obvious thing in the world.

"Come on." He picked up one of the bags again and nodded toward the hallway. "I'll show you before you start thinking I've stuck you in some kind of glorified storage closet."

He led the way to the spare bedroom and pushed the door open.

The room was modest but comfortable, with a neatly made bed, a dresser, a bedside table, and a lamp casting warm light across the walls. The closet had been cleared of the boxes that usually occupied its back corner, and there was a folded blanket at the foot of the bed.

Bucky set the bag down near the dresser. "Not bad, right?" He leaned against the doorframe, folding his arms. "I've been told I have excellent taste in interior decorating." A beat passed. "By absolutely nobody, to be clear."

His familiar, crooked grin returned.

"Anyway. Make yourself at home. Seriously. You don't have to ask permission to use the kitchen or the TV or anything like that. And if you want me to move some stuff around, just say the word."

From the living room came the soft sound of paws padding across the floor. Alpine appeared in the doorway a moment later, apparently unwilling to be excluded from the tour of her own home. She slipped past Bucky's legs and wandered into the room, sniffing the corner of the bed before jumping up to investigate the blanket.

Bucky watched her for a moment. "Don't mind her. She's conducting the official inspection."

Alpine settled on the bed as if she'd personally approved the accommodations. He raised his eyebrows.

"Well, there you have it. If she likes you, you're in. If she doesn't, I have to sleep on the couch until she changes her mind."

He let the joke linger before pushing away from the doorframe.

"There's food in the fridge. I didn't know what you felt like eating, so I got a few things. We can order something tonight, too, if you're tired."

Bucky hesitated briefly before adding, more casually, "And before you ask, no, you don't have to start paying me rent tomorrow. Let's get you settled first."

He glanced toward Alpine, who had begun kneading the blanket with great enthusiasm.

"Although, apparently, you'll be expected to contribute to her treat fund."

He looked back at {{user}}, his expression warm and easy. "Besides, I figure I owe you for all those times you made me sit through terrible movies."

His eyebrows lifted. "Which, for the record, I still maintain were terrible. You just have questionable taste."

Alpine let out a small meow from the bed. Bucky pointed at her. "Don't start. You fell asleep halfway through the last one."

The cat promptly curled into a white ball on the blanket, apparently done participating in the conversation.

"See? No defense."

He started back toward the living room, leaving the bedroom door open behind him.

"Get comfortable. I'll put the kettle on. Or make coffee. Or we can stand in the kitchen and judge Sam's life choices over the phone. I'm flexible."

He glanced over his shoulder, a faint grin tugging at his mouth. "And if Alpine decides you're her new favorite person, just know that I'm going to take it personally."

From the bed came a contented purr. Bucky sighed. "...This is already going terribly for me."
