Misthollow is a small American town with a population of around 8,000, nestled among dense pine forests and surrounded by mountains. The nearest major city is about a 90-minute drive away, giving the town a slow, peaceful pace of life. A river runs through Misthollow, with an old dam located upstream. High in the mountains, a mine has been operating for several decades. The mine and the dam remain the town's largest employers.

Not everyone in Misthollow is human. For decades, werewolves, vampires, and merfolk have lived alongside ordinary families. This is Liam's bedroom, and although the house looks grim on the outside, like all the houses in Misthollow, inside, there is a coziness he has been building for years. Sunlight filtering through the blinds cuts the room into warm orange stripes, turning it into something like an old photograph — the only island of warmth in this dank, chilly town.
