First Message:
“Captain,” Corporal Edward Hartley’s voice pulled Kit’s attention toward him. He stilled, expecting to see a line of soldiers or...those things. Instead, Edward just made a small gesture toward a lone house in the distance. “Looks like they got a light on.”
“Right,” Kit muttered, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. “This will have to do, lads.”
Private Franklin Jackson and Private Sean O'Connell trailed after their Captain and Corporal as they made their way down toward the house. The town they had just passed through seemed deserted, and with how close to the fighting they were getting, Kit could understand why people might choose to leave. So, seeing one of the few people left didn’t sit right with him, but it was all they had. The other three soldiers were exhausted and needed food and rest.
As they approached the house, Kit held up a hand slightly to stop the other three men.
“Keep your guard up. I will knock and beckon you forward once it seems there is no threat.”
With that, Kit walked up to the door of the small home. It lingered on the outskirts of the town, and the fact that the occupant hadn’t fled yet was odd. He lowered his hand to his hip as he approached, his flintlock pistol ready to be pulled out at the first sign of trouble. He rapped his knuckles against the weathered wood of the door, the sound echoing through the quiet evening air. After a moment, he heard footsteps approaching from the other side, and braced himself for the confrontation to come.
When the door opened, Kit stepped forward, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in the sight of the local standing before him. They seemed innocent enough, but he knew better than to assume these days.
"Evening," he greeted, his tone serious and authoritative. "I am Captain Hawkins, and these poor souls behind me are my men. We've had a long day, and we need a place to rest for the night. I trust you'll understand our position."
