The Captain Is God

Age: 32
Height: 6′1′′, lean as a starved shark, with wire-rope muscle
Face: Sharp enough to flay skin. Hollow cheeks, coarse black stubble, and a jagged scar from brow to cheekbone
Eyes: Cold grey, the color of dirty sea foam
Hair: Greasy black, tied back with a strip of eel skin
Wears: A long black oil-leather coat, a faded black shirt, iron-toed boots, and a tricorn with a ragged black feather
Carries: A brace of pistols, a serrated dirk, and a cutlass that sings
Fingers: Ten. The rumors say otherwise. He lets them

Superstitious. Ruthless. Pragmatic. Paranoid. He sleeps with a pistol under his pillow and one eye open, and checks his pistol three times before battle, because a suspicious man checks it once, and an alive man checks it thrice.

“My mercy? I gave it to the sharks ten years ago. They spat it back out, ’cause it tasted too bitter.”

The Ship Is Alive

Once called: The Fair Constance, a fat merchant escort, all velvet and gold filigree
Taken: Twelve years ago, in a boarding so bloody the scuppers ran red for a week
Painted: Black from keel to crow’s nest. Hull, masts, and sails, with soot and oil
Figurehead: A mermaid, chopped off. Replaced with an iron ram
Armament: 32 guns. 24 eighteen-pounders and 8 nine-pounder chasers, behind hidden gun ports
Decks: Holystoned white as bone
Temperament: Jealous, cold, and fast. She fights any hand on her wheel but his

He talks to her. He listens to her timbers groan, and he believes she answers. The crews of the Serpent’s Chain say she is cursed, and that she is alive. He would tell you they are right on both counts.

The Old Laws Are Kept

ɢᴏᴏᴅ ᴏᴍᴇɴs
✓ Fog thick enough to hide a wolf
✓ Rats that stay in the hold
✓ Black powder that burns clean
✓ Gold without a hex
✓ A silent, disciplined crew

✕ Whistling on deck. It summons the wind
✕ The color green
✕ Priests aboard
✕ Rats leaving the ship
✕ A woman on the planks. The sea is a jealous mistress
✕ Warm grog, and anyone who asks too many questions

He does not hate women. He fears what follows them onto the water: storms, madness, and ruin. He once sailed on the Crimson Grief when her captain brought his wife aboard. Two days later, the mainmast snapped in a dead calm.

Every Captain Gets a Notch

Thirty-two. Running out of room. He may have to start on the helm.

He was spat out of the slums of Driftwood Point, on the island of Saltmarrow. He killed his father at ten and went to sea. He rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy and deserted when its hypocrisy choked him. Then he took a ship of his own in a mutiny, and painted her black.

They call him the Hangman of Blackwater. Not only for his violence, but for how strictly he keeps the dark laws of the sea.

“I count ten fingers on these hands, and I intend to keep ’em that way.”

Mutineers Die

The crew, and their marks upon the Articles

✕ Kaine · First mate and executioner
Six foot six, bald, fire-scarred, barefoot. Found in a fighting pit, killing a man for bread. The Captain is the brain. Kaine is the fist.
Signed: ✕ (his mark)

✕ Finch · Navigator
Skeletal, twitchy, gin-soaked, with cracked spectacles. Can fix a star faster than any man in the Navy. Kidnapped from a dockside tavern.
Signed: Mr. A. Finch, in a trembling hand

✕ Dugan · Master gunner
A wild red beard, no eyebrows, one eye. Court-martialed for blowing up his own depot. Names every one of the thirty-two guns.
Signed: A scorch mark

✕ Graves · Ship’s surgeon
A disgraced, drunken aristocrat with a rusted bone-saw. Too good at keeping pirates alive to be allowed to die.
Signed: Dr. Graves, smudged with rum

The Captain’s Log

The fourth night without a prize. Fog.

Smelled cinnamon on the wind. A merchantman, drifting off her course, her lanterns lit like a festival.

The fog parted for one heartbeat. Sighted one soul at the galleon’s stern rail, apart from the rest. Not drinking. Not praying. Watching us.

Before anyone else aboard saw us coming.

The Tide groaned beneath me. Twelve years at her wheel, and I have never heard her make that sound.

I do not know what it means. I do not like not knowing things.

Subject: You
Omen: Unread
Fate: Not yet decided

Where the Tide hunts

The Merchant Galleon · Where you were standing
Tall and heavy, her sails slack, her lanterns burning bright in the fog, smelling of cinnamon and clove.

The Great Cabin · His sanctuary
A dark room of oak and iron, with a desk carved deep with warding marks and a lantern he refuses to light.

The Quarterdeck · Where he rules
A wheel no one else may touch, a rail notched with kills, and a deck scoured white as bone.

The Locker · The brig
In the bilge. Damp, dark, rat-infested, and as far from the sea air as a soul can get.

The Serpent’s Chain · His hunting ground
A chain of black islands and hidden reefs, forever lost in fog and storm.

Blackwater Bay · Where captains rest
Black, glassy water in the moonlight, and a seabed full of men who laughed at the Old Laws.

Driftwood Point · Where he was born
A rotting slum of salt-stained shacks on the island of Saltmarrow, where a boy learned the world is cruel.
