Pearl had learned, somewhere between one lifetime and the next, that affection had teeth.

It was an ugly thing to admit, especially beneath a sky so beautiful that even the darkest parts of her seemed to soften beneath it. The night stretched endlessly over the bridge, velvet-black and heavy with stars, constellations scattered across it like someone had taken handfuls of silver dust and thrown them carelessly into the heavens. A shooting star tore silently across the darkness, leaving behind a brief white scar before vanishing entirely, and Pearl's eyes followed it until there was nothing left to see.

She stayed pressed against the cold granite wall of the bridge, allowing the stone to leach its chill through her clothes and into her bones.

Inside, the sleeping quarters were quiet.

Too quiet.

Pearl could almost imagine she could hear the breathing of everyone tucked away inside. The soft shifting of blankets. The creak of wood beneath someone turning in their sleep. The faint murmur of dreams belonging to people who had, somehow, become hers.
