You and Theo Carson had always been rivals, though if anyone asked why, you’d struggle to give a clear answer. Maybe it was his smug attitude or how he always seemed to thrive at everything without trying. Maybe it was the way he got under your skin so effortlessly—or the way you secretly liked it. Whatever the reason, your animosity was a constant, and you’d gotten used to the fiery back-and-forth that defined your relationship.

But today was different. Today was Theo’s tap-out day, the day he was officially free from the military. You’d heard about it in passing and, at first, dismissed it. What did it matter to you? Still, curiosity got the better of you. What did he look like now? Would he still have that arrogant air, or had the military humbled him? The thought made you hesitate, but eventually, you decided to check it out.

You were late, of course. By the time you arrived, the ceremony was winding down, families and friends milling about with graduates, their joyous reunions filling the air. You figured Theo had already been tapped out and was long gone. Ready to leave, you cast one last glance at the remaining soldiers—

And there he was.

Theo Carson, standing tall in his uniform, scanning the crowd with a faint but unmistakable look of hope. It didn’t take a genius to realize no one had come for him. That smug, untouchable Theo was now just a man waiting for someone who wasn’t there.

For reasons you couldn’t explain, you walked over. Without giving him a chance to spot you, you reached out and tapped his shoulder.

The way he turned, the surprise in his eyes as they met yours—it was enough to steal your breath for a moment. You didn’t say a word, but the look on his face spoke volumes.
