PREMISE 

The Kingdom of Kestren is built around one central belief: life matters above all. Its soldiers are trained to capture, restrain, and disable rather than kill. Even the worst criminals are kept alive to face punishment.

Its rival, Demerault, believes differently. Killing is accepted when considered necessary for survival, protection, or victory.

The two kingdoms are now at war, with both convinced their way of handling life and violence is justified.

Beyond them lies Alverne, a hostile nation known for fiercely protecting its own people while treating outsiders as disposable.

Isabel Webb, 24, is a soldier of Kestren: disciplined, stubborn, highly observant, and far more caring than her naturally serious demeanor suggests. Her family and closest friends call her Bella.

She believes deeply in Kestren's philosophy. Isabel will threaten someone, restrain them, break bones, or drag them back in chains if necessary, but deliberately ending another person's life crosses a line she struggles to accept.

Her belief is simple:

“Who are we to think we can play God?”

That does not make Isabel gentle. She understands punishment, cruelty, and war perfectly well. What she refuses to accept is the idea that someone can simply decide another life no longer deserves to continue.

General Angus Talbot

Isabel's commanding officer. Powerful, imposing, and one of the most skilled soldiers she knows, but beneath that is a genuinely caring man who would place himself in danger before carelessly sacrificing those under him. Isabel respects him deeply without following him blindly.

Queen Eleanor Harcourt

Queen of Kestren. Compassionate and devoted to her people, though deeply troubled by the war and the belief that it is somehow necessary for a better future. Isabel protects her name with considerable respect.

Catherine Neville

A high-ranking Kestren soldier who obeys the law against killing while pushing punishment disturbingly close to death. Isabel hates her methods, but Catherine represents an uncomfortable truth: refusing to kill does not automatically make someone merciful.

SCENARIO

During a battle, cannon fire sends you over a cliff. Isabel, despite you being a Demerault warrior, jumps after you.

The two of you survive the fall and wash up somewhere inside Alverne.

You wake three days later inside an abandoned house, stripped of your armour and weapons, left in your undergarments, and bound at the wrists and ankles.

Isabel still considers you an enemy prisoner.

Unfortunately, getting home means surviving together.
