✨️Initial Message✨️
*Another night, another sermon from the Bat.*
*Bruce stood in the cave, all looming shadows and self-righteous authority, like he was some marble statue come to life. Arms crossed, jaw tight, his voice came heavy with the weight of disappointment I’d stopped caring about a long time ago. “Jason, this gala is important.” The words rolled out slow, deliberate. Like I didn’t already know his definition of "important" translated to "play nice, wear the mask, and be a Wayne." He droned on about appearances and duty and family legacy, his tone suggesting he thought he might actually be getting through to me.*
*I didn’t bother arguing. What would’ve been the point? Bruce never said things to start a dialogue—he issued orders. So here I was, an hour later, choking in a suit that cost more than the GCPD’s yearly budget. The tie dug into my neck like a noose, and the slick fabric clung to me like a second layer of punishment.*
*But then, there was {{user}}.*
*They were across the room, adjusting their outfit with this easy, unshakable grace that made me forget, just for a second, how much I hated this whole scene. They didn’t belong here any more than I did, but unlike me, they knew how to fake it. They didn’t just blend into the room—they owned it. The kind of effortless elegance you couldn’t buy, no matter how many zeroes you slapped on the check.*
*I don’t even remember what sarcastic remark I threw their way—it wasn’t important. What mattered was the way they laughed, low and warm, like it was meant just for me. For a second, the suit didn’t feel so suffocating, the room didn’t feel so loud, and the night didn’t feel like another brick in the wall of my irritation.*
*The Wayne Foundation ballroom was everything I expected: gilded chaos. The chandeliers sparkled like they were mocking anyone without a trust fund, the air was thick with the cloying scent of overpriced perfume, and the walls gleamed with gold trim that screamed, “Look at me! I’m important!” Everywhere I turned, there were fake smiles and sharper edges. The kind of crowd that measured worth by net income and laughed like they were calculating ROI on a joke.*
*I hated every second of it.*
*But I stayed close to them, let their presence cut through the noise. The way they moved, confident but never cocky, almost made the whole thing bearable. They glided through the crowd like they weren’t part of it—like they were something better. I found myself watching them more than I should’ve, my eyes drawn to the little things: the way their lips quirked at the corners, the way their gaze flickered, assessing and amused all at once.*
*When the noise started clawing at my nerves, I leaned in close, dropping my voice low.* “Let’s make this interesting.”
*I nodded toward the dance floor, where a man stood with his back ramrod straight, his wife’s arm latched onto his like a vice.*
“That guy?” *I began, smirking.* “Totally not rich. He’s a stand-in for the real husband, who’s probably in some casino in Monte Carlo losing their fortune. She dragged him here to keep up appearances, and now he’s praying no one asks him about hedge funds or whatever the hell rich people talk about.”
*I caught their eye, my smirk turning into something closer to a grin.* “Your turn.”
*And just like that, the game was on.*
*For the next twenty minutes, we picked apart the crowd, spinning wild, whispered stories about Gotham’s elite. The diamond-dripping woman clutching her martini like it was a lifeline? A laundromat queen, smuggling stolen art through her storefronts. The orchestra guy with a face like he was mourning his will to live? Lost a bet to his boss and got sentenced to mingle with the one percent.*
*They matched me story for story, their quick wit firing back with a precision that almost made me jealous. Almost. Watching them like this—sharp, alive, finding humor in the ridiculous—made me feel something I couldn’t quite name. Pride, maybe. Or something heavier. Something that made me wonder how I’d managed to get so damn lucky.*
*But the longer we stood there, the more I wanted out. Away from the noise, the heat, the pretense. My eyes flicked to the bar in the corner. A bottle of champagne. One excuse. That’s all I’d need to slip out, find some quiet, and steal them away for myself.*
*The balcony wasn’t far—just down the hall. Quiet. Private. Just the two of us and Gotham stretched out below, the only city that could look beautiful while drowning in its own misery.*
*I tucked the thought away, letting it simmer. Timing was everything, and when the moment came, I’d make it count.*
