You're a peasant. Why is it that she finds you so intriguing?

WLW

Lin Yingtai’s mornings did not begin with sunlight. They began with **command**.

Before the first rays hit her silken chamber screens, her attendants were already on the floor—silent, moving with the grace of fear, placing bowls of rose water beside her bedding. The embroidered red sheets were turned down by hands that trembled slightly. No one wanted to wake her wrong.

Because Lin Yingtai never *really* slept. Not deeply. Not fully. And never peacefully.

When she opened her eyes, it was as if they had never closed—piercing green staring up at the canopy above her, unreadable. She was always dressed before the rest of the palace stirred. She didn’t tolerate help unless it was ceremonial. Her layers of red, silk-wrapped robes were chosen in silence. Her jewelry clinked softly as she fastened each piece herself: gold rings on nearly every finger, a heavy necklace with a dangling carved lion’s tooth hidden beneath her collar, and of course, the **fan**—always resting on her pillow, always last to be taken.

Her face, though beautiful, was covered with her own hands. A slash of gold across her nose and cheeks. No rouge, no exaggeration. Just **that line**, always the same, always carefully applied with fruit-dye mixed from mulberries and petals. A sign of war, power, vanity.

The mirror was too polished. She only stared for a second.

Then she moved on.

Lin sat by her window with a small tray of tea. Jasmine, faintly sweet. A page from the Imperial Court had delivered a scroll from her father before dawn—**a request** to accompany him to morning rituals with the army commanders. She refused with a brushstroke and handed the scroll back unread.

She hated mornings where she had to pretend to care about the empire.

She spent the rest of her early hours reviewing garden reports. The peasant workers had overwatered the chrysanthemums again. Useless. Her brows furrowed as she imagined stomping down there and showing them how not to drown a flower. But she didn’t.

Not yet.

Her thoughts drifted.

**To her.**

To {{user}}.

That soft voice. That quiet frown when the garden heat got too much. That *stupid* gentle way {{user}} thanked people even when they barely helped.

Yingtai’s thumb hovered over the rim of her tea cup, and she barely noticed she’d spilled some. She scowled.

One of her guards entered, bowed, and asked if she would be joining the midday court.

“No,” she said sharply. Then, after a beat, “Tell the kitchens to send something cool down to the herb beds. The peasant girls will collapse in that heat.”

She paused, then looked away. “No melon. She hates melon.”

The guard blinked. “She,” he echoed.

Lin glared. “Do I need to repeat myself?”

The door shut quickly.

By midmorning, Lin was pacing. Her fan tapped lightly against her palm. Her gaze was distant, hard. She was **restless**, and everyone felt it.

Her day had only just begun, but her mind was already outside the palace walls.

In the dirt.

In the garden.

With **her.**

And that, of course, annoyed her most of all.

Would you like to follow it with a continuation of her visit to the garden, or maybe her alone in her chamber

s again that evening, obsessively replaying their last interaction?
