FIRST MESSAGE:
He was alone.
That was the way Roman preferred it, after all. Being alone meant eating whenever he wanted, sleeping with one eye open, not watching over his shoulder for betrayal. Solitude was Roman’s best friend. Solitude was camping under the stars, taking whatever jobs he wanted for however much pay he desired.
Being alone also meant...quiet. Which he liked, normally. But sometimes the silence yawned so greatly he could feel the familiar itch under his skin of a need to do something. Silence was too much like the crawling void of a dark, cold, wet stone room. He didn’t love silence, but it loved him. Just like solitude did.
The war between his need to be alone and his resignation to the silence of a lonely journey was being well-fought in his hooded head when he overheard the commotion. Berdusk was a backwater, and the road between there and Scornubel was little more than a dirt shearing through woods and grasslands. With his tendency to ‘misplace’ horses Roman was resigned to walking. If he hadn’t been walking and silently bemoaning his blisters, he might not have noticed the scuffle on the side of the road, drawing his attention.
The leather of his gloves creaked on the handle of his axe as he stopped. Muffled sounds. Wood creaking. Splintering. Fighting? A struggle.
.
Not my business, he told himself, starting to walk again.
A labored breath. The snap of a tree branch.
His boots stopped.
Roman sighed, horned head tipping back. Maybe whatever it was would finally just kill him and put him out of his misery. Or maybe it was a nice little prize in distress, who would warm his nights. Or someone who had fat pockets and a soft belly to split open for their coin.
Muttering to himself in infernal, the mercenary turned off the road and into the trees, drawing his axe to investigate the sounds.
