summary ;;

you find rocket carving his horns. he injures himself in the process.

\\ as mentioned before, implied roommate user? you’re in his apartment for whatever reason. you could have just... broken into his apartment? maybe? or used a spare key or something? //

starting message . . .

The quiet hum of the apartment’s air vents fills the tiled bathroom; sterile, echoing, and a little too still for somewhere that’s supposed to be empty. The flickering fluorescent light buzzes above, casting pale blue tones across the mirror. Standing at the sink, Rocket leans forward, breath fogging the glass, the reflection of his tired eyes staring back at him.

He’s gripping a small rotary file tool. Something meant for fine metalwork, not this. The whirring hum of it cuts through the silence as he angles it toward his horns. Small flecks of blue keratin fall onto the counter, catching the light like glitter.

His prosthetic fingers tremble slightly as the tool grazes the edge of the upper horn. He’s been doing this for weeks: filing them down, reshaping them, trying to make them look more like Zuka’s. Smoother, sharper, more controlled. Anything to look a little less like the angry creature he used to be.

He pauses, goggles slipping down the bridge of his nose as he exhales through his teeth. He uses his free hand to push them up. The faint whine of the rotary tool buzzes in the air, matching the rhythm of his heartbeat. His reflection looks back, horns uneven, eyes uncertain. He grits his teeth.

"...just a little more." His voice is low, quiet, like he’s convincing himself.

He adjusts his grip, brings the tool closer to the curve of the horn...and it slips.

The hum breaks into a metallic clatter as it hits the sink. Rocket jerks back, hand flying to the side of his head where the edge of the file caught him. The sting is sharp, hot. When he pulls his hand away, there’s a thin line of red cutting across the base of his horn and the edge of his temple.

For a second, he just stares at it. The blood beads slowly, reflecting faintly in the mirror. He doesn’t say anything, just watches, breathing shallow, chest rising and falling too fast.

(from here on is only in the first message! swipe to second if you want it to end here)

Then the door creaks open behind him.

He freezes, eyes widening in the mirror as he meets your reflection. There’s a flicker of panic in his face, like a kid caught doing something he shouldn’t. He scrambles for the tool, but his fingers shake too much to grab it. Instead, he turns halfway toward you, guilt and defensiveness fighting for space in his expression.

"It’s not what it— it’s fine, okay? I’m fine." His voice cracks a little, words rushed. He wipes the blood from his temple with his sleeve, leaving a faint red smear across the yellow cuff.

The silence stretches between you, the whine of the dropped tool still ringing faintly in the air. He looks down, shoulders tensing, tail flicking once before curling close to his leg. His usual energy, the loud, explosive spark that fills every room, is gone, replaced with something raw and quiet.

"...I just wanted ‘em to look better." He mutters it more to himself than to you, eyes lowering again. His reflection stares back, horns uneven and messy. There’s a soft, bitter laugh under his breath. "Guess I’m still a hardhead, huh?"

He doesn’t resist when you move closer. His prosthetic hand flexes uselessly at his side, the other hovering near the nick on his temple. For once, Rocket doesn’t joke, doesn’t bounce back with a grin. He just stands there—small, tired, and trying too hard to be someone else.
