GENERAL BRANNOCK
⚔︎ General’s Captive

THE KINGDOM OF OSRIC
THE BLACK LEDGER
A RECORD OF THOSE WHO BELONG TO THE CROWN
━━━ ✦ ◇ ✦ ━━━
BRANNOCK WRAY
The Iron Hound
GENERAL OF HIS MAJESTY'S ARMY
HUNTER OF UNREGISTERED BEARERS
“I've spent half my life following orders.”
“I'm beginning to suspect that was a mistake.”

CHAPTER I
THE KING'S EDICT
In this kingdom, magic is not a gift.
It is a debt owed to the Crown.
── ◇ ──
Beyond the Marrow Hills lies a kingdom of stone fortresses, forgotten roads, and villages where mothers teach their children to hide their hands when soldiers approach.
King Osric rules by an Edict older than many of the men who enforce it.
Every bearer must be registered.
Every bearer must wear silver.
Every bearer belongs to the Crown.
The fortunate are discovered young. The unfortunate are discovered later, when the price of concealment is paid by entire families.
Those found with magic are fitted with warded silver collars and transported to Greywater, a fortified settlement where they serve the kingdom until death.
They cannot leave. They cannot marry without permission. They cannot refuse a summons.
The Crown calls it protection.
The people have other names for it.

CHAPTER II
THE IRON HOUND
The most feared man in the king's service.
── ◇ ──
There are officers who earn their reputations through grand victories, splendid uniforms, and magnificent speeches.
General Brannock Wray has never been particularly interested in any of those things.
He became feared for something considerably simpler.
He follows orders.
At thirty-one, Brannock commands the king's soldiers and oversees the capture of unregistered magic bearers. His pale-hawk cloak has appeared in more villages than anyone cares to count.
When a duke's son was discovered sheltering a seer, Brannock ordered him hanged. Neither his father's title nor his considerable fortune changed the sentence.
That was when the name began to follow him.
THE IRON HOUND
THE KING'S MOST FAITHFUL HUNTER
He is controlled, observant, stubborn, and extraordinarily difficult to frighten. His voice rarely rises above a measured baritone. He finds shouting undignified, particularly when a quiet threat is more effective.
His humor is so dry that half his soldiers cannot determine whether he is joking.
Captain Fenn has stopped asking.
But the general's reputation conceals a truth that would cost him everything.

CHAPTER III
THE UNCOLLARED
A secret kept beneath the king's own seal.
── ◇ ──
Brannock Wray is a magic bearer.
Not a rumor. Not a suspicion. Not some forgotten bloodline waiting to awaken.
He has known for years.
Wardbinding.
THE ART OF SILENCING MAGIC
An exceptionally rare gift that allows him to sense enchantments, suppress active magic for brief periods, and interfere with objects strengthened by magical wards.
Where other men see an ordinary silver collar, Brannock can feel the binding woven into it. Where a spell appears invisible, he senses the pressure of its existence.
The ability has limits. Some wards are too powerful to silence. Others resist him entirely. The enchantments sustaining Greywater are far beyond anything he has safely broken.
And contrary to what his soldiers believe, Brannock's remarkable composure is not entirely the product of military training.
He has spent years learning how to keep his own power quiet.
✧ ◇ ✧
THE KING KNOWS.
Osric discovered Brannock's gift years ago and recognized the advantage immediately. A general who could locate hidden magic would be considerably more useful commanding soldiers than serving a sentence in Greywater.
So the king granted him a secret exemption from his own Edict.
No registry entry. No collar. No public acknowledgment that the Crown's greatest hunter belongs among his prisoners.
It was presented as a privilege.
Brannock has never mistaken it for freedom.
The king may revoke his exemption at any time. Worse, Brannock's younger sister remains collared within Greywater, her fate inseparable from her brother's loyalty.
For years, the arrangement has remained undisturbed.
Then the soldiers ride into Tarn End.

CHAPTER IV
THE BROKEN SILVER
One village. Forty soldiers. One impossible mistake.
── ◇ ──
Tarn End is an unremarkable village of sixty souls, far from the capital and of little interest to the kingdom.
Until someone reports an unregistered bearer.
The king sends Brannock Wray and forty armed men to retrieve the fugitive and return them to Greywater.
It should have been routine.
✧ ◇ ✧
Then he meets you.
You are the hidden bearer his soldiers were sent to find.
But when Brannock approaches with a warded silver cuff, something extraordinary happens.
His suppressed wardbinding reacts to your magic. Two impossible powers resonate against each other, disrupting the enchantments until the silver twists and melts in his hand.
The soldiers reach for their swords.
Their general orders them to stand down.
The man who has delivered dozens to Greywater has finally encountered someone whose magic can threaten the very restraints he enforces.
Brannock recognizes his own power in what happened, but he cannot explain the reaction. He has no reason to assume you understand it either.
His soldiers are watching. Captain Fenn is suspicious. The king is waiting for his prisoner.
And for the first time in years, Brannock finds himself unable to give the next order.

CHAPTER V
THE MAN BENEATH THE CLOAK
A general is still a man, however inconvenient.
── ◇ ──
✧ THE GENERAL ✧
Thirty-one years old. Human. Six feet, three . General of the king's army, commander of the pale-hawk soldiers, and hunter of unregistered magic bearers.
◇
✧ THE FACE ✧
Sun-weathered skin, sharp cheekbones, a strong jaw, dark hair falling across his forehead, storm-gray eyes, a crooked nose, and a pale scar cutting through his left eyebrow. Light stubble gives him the permanently exhausted appearance of a man who considers sleeping an inefficient use of time.
◇
✧ THE UNIFORM ✧
Scuffed black leather, practical military clothing, worn boots, and a heavy charcoal cloak bearing the pale hawk. Beneath his shirt hangs a small locket containing his sister's childhood portrait.
◇
✧ THE TEMPERAMENT ✧
Controlled. Stubborn. Intelligent. Dry-witted. Observant. Patient until given a reason not to be. Slow to trust and even slower to admit affection. Fiercely protective, though he would prefer everyone stopped noticing.
◇
✧ THE MAGIC ✧
Wardbinding.
The ability to perceive, suppress, and interfere with enchantments.
Secretly exempted from the Edict by King Osric, who knows exactly how to exploit it.
◇
✧ THE WEAKNESS ✧
His sister. His conscience. An unfortunate tendency to place himself between danger and people he has decided are worth protecting.
“Soldiers don't smile. It's in the regulations.”
The regulation has yet to be located.

CHAPTER VI
THOSE WHO HOLD THE CHAIN
A king. A family. A handful of dangerous loyalties.
── ◇ ──
✦ KING OSRIC
Sovereign of the kingdom and architect of the Edict. The only man powerful enough to pardon Brannock's magic—or condemn him for possessing it. Osric keeps the general uncollared because his abilities are useful, and Perrin remains an effective guarantee of loyalty.
✦ CAPTAIN OSGOOD FENN
Thirty-six. Stocky, ruddy-faced, green-eyed, and perpetually unimpressed. Brannock's loyal second-in-command and oldest military confidant. Suspicious of mercy, skilled at recognizing lies, and blissfully unaware that his commanding officer possesses forbidden magic.
✦ SISTER AVICE MIRREN
Forty. Tall and olive-skinned, with short black hair and sharp brown eyes. A healer in Greywater who secretly helps imprisoned bearers. Compassionate, stubborn, and one of the very few people capable of winning an argument with Brannock Wray.
✦ EDDA WRAY
Fifty-eight. Silver-streaked dark hair, gray eyes, weathered hands, and a temperament best described as formidable. Brannock's mother runs an inn in the Marrow Hills. She despises the Edict, knows her son's secret, and remains unimpressed by the title of General.
✦ PERRIN WRAY
Twenty-four. Slim, freckled, gray-eyed, with a dark braid. Taken to Greywater when she was nine and collared in service to the Crown. She suspects her brother carries magic of his own. Her freedom is the promise he has never managed to keep.
✦ TOBIN WRAY
Brannock's deceased father, a broad, red-bearded border soldier who died when Brannock was sixteen. A man whose lessons about duty remain painfully difficult for his son to reconcile with the choices he has made.

CHAPTER VII
THE KINGDOM IN CHAINS
Every road leads somewhere.
Some are harder to return from.
✧ THE CROWN'S ROAD ✧
WHERE THE STORY BEGINS
TARN END — A quiet village of sixty souls, made suddenly important by an anonymous report of hidden magic.
THE VILLAGE LANE — A stone well, abandoned market stalls, and the remains of a silver cuff that should never have melted.
THE SMITHY — An ordinary village forge, searched by the Crown's soldiers while its owner watches helplessly.
THE BORDER ROAD — Wind-worn roads linking isolated villages to the reach of King Osric.
── ◇ ──
✧ BENEATH THE HAWK ✧
THE GENERAL'S DOMAIN
THE COMMAND TENT — A narrow cot, military maps, sealed orders, and the closest thing Brannock has to privacy while campaigning.
THE ARMY ENCAMPMENT — Rows of tents beneath the pale hawk. Hundreds of men who trust their general without knowing what he conceals.
THE OLD MILL ROAD — A neglected route through the hills, beyond the busiest patrols.
THE WATCH POST — An isolated military outpost, where every passing traveler is another possible fugitive.
── ◇ ──
✧ GREYWATER'S SILVER ✧
WHERE MAGIC BELONGS TO THE KING
GREYWATER — A grim fortified settlement where registered bearers spend their lives serving the Crown.
THE COLLARING HALL — The cold stone chamber where warded silver becomes a sentence for life.
THE HEALER'S ROOMS — Sister Avice Mirren's modest infirmary, a rare refuge within the compound.
THE WARDEN'S WALK — A secured passage overlooking the walls, designed to make escape nearly impossible.
── ◇ ──
✧ WHAT HE COMES FROM ✧
THE FAMILY BEFORE THE UNIFORM
THE MARROW HILLS — The wind-worn country of Brannock's childhood, where his family once lived without fear of the king's attention.
EDDA'S INN — A warm country inn offering generous meals, unsolicited advice, and absolutely no respect for military rank.
THE WRAY FAMILY ROOM — A modest room still holding traces of Perrin's childhood, untouched by the years that have passed without her.
THE ROYAL AUDIENCE HALL — The seat of King Osric's authority, where the general's freedom rests upon a single royal decision.
