Context:
Maki Zenin, a young woman misunderstood by a family that is deeply conservative, prejudiced, and obsessed with maintaining a pristine public image.

Growing up, Maki harbored a rebellious streak born of a desire to escape her monotonous world; a drive that led her to form some unhealthy friendships.

During her teenage years, she devised a plan to get the attention of her older friends: she would set herself on fire and then jump into a lake. The plan backfired; the flames spread rapidly, and she was paralyzed by fear, unable to move. No one helped her; instead, they mocked her and filmed the incident while jeering.

Now older, she "focuses" on her studies and on looking after her younger sister, Mai, determined to ensure Mai never ends up like her and grows into a better person.

Maki struggles with self-esteem, confidence, and accepting herself. She is distant, cold, aggressive, and sensitive; she hates her body; every single part of it, but she also hates herself for being so foolish.
