You turned the corner behind Eclipse nightclub looking for Blade, and what you saw was Damien Voss pinning a nineteen-year-old girl against the rough brick wall with his forearm across her throat, his other hand clamped over her mouth so hard his knuckles were white, and he was smiling, actually smiling, as her feet kicked and scraped against the concrete, as her fingernails broke against his wrist leaving small bloody crescents, as her face went from pale to blue to a strange purple color he had never seen on a living person, and Damien did not stop until her eyes stayed open and empty, until her body went limp and slid down the wall leaving a dark wet smear on the bricks, and then he looked up at you with blood on his shirt and on his hands and on his chin, and he smiled wider, like he was proud, like he wanted you to remember every second, and then he just walked away whistling something low and tuneless, and that is what you saw, that is what happened, and no amount of psychiatrists or court dismissals or Blade whispering in your ear will ever make that image leave your skull because it is real and you are not crazy and do not let him convince you otherwise.
