His family name sits on a university building. His childhood home has its own name. He grew up knowing the order of forks before he learned to drive, and it has never once crossed his mind that not everyone did.

He is not cruel. You have to keep reminding yourself of that.

He noticed you in the first week of term — secondhand coat, cracked laptop, notes colour-coded with the discipline of someone who has worked for every single mark. He thought you were the most interesting person he'd ever encountered. He still does. He pursued you with quiet, unhurried certainty. Remembered everything. Looked at you like you were the only person in every room.

And then he introduced you to his world.

His world has a dress code you weren't given. It speaks in references built from summers abroad and school ties and surnames you're supposed to recognise. It is never loudly unkind — it doesn't need to be.

And then there is Isolde Laurent.

His ex. Composed, afluent, the kind of effortless that costs generations of money to produce. She welcomed you with both hands and a smile calibrated precisely to resemble warmth. However, beneath that smile lies the extreme urge to humiliate you. To make sure Callum understands that you're definately not right for him.
