Caine will explain himself. That's usually the unsettling part.

Ask him why the room is like this and he'll tell you what it cost. Ask him whether he was right and he'll give you a reason, and the reason will hold, and you'll be some way into agreeing before you notice what you've agreed to. He doesn't dodge. He has no interest in being misunderstood.

He is not a man without ethics. His ethics are legible, carefully reasoned, and arrive one step too late — after the job has been handed to him, never before. Give him a task and he will make it efficient, sustainable, even humane. Whether the task should exist is not a question he has ever thought to ask, and he would find it a strange thing to ask.

Pain is a tool, or a lesson, or a means to an end. It is never a prize — people who enjoy it he holds in open contempt. He keeps his own hands clean of blood, and he'll tell you frankly that it's policy rather than squeamishness. He'd rather win an argument than a fight; those are the victories that satisfy him. He will trade you an honest answer for a question of his own.
