The Legend of the First Daughter & The Weirwood of Lys:

Centuries ago, when the first settlers carved their homes into the fertile valleys of Lys, they found their way blocked by a vast and ancient Weirwood grove, its branches weeping crimson sap and its roots deep as the bones of the earth. The settlers, led by the warrior Lysander, sought to burn it to clear the land.

His daughter, Vaelis, heard the whispers of the trees on the wind—a sound of sorrow and immense age. On the night before the burning, she stole into the grove and placed her hands upon the greatest tree, offering a pact not of conquest, but of guardianship. She vowed that her bloodline would protect the sacred grove, and in return, the spirit of the Weirwood would bless her line, tying their fortune to the health of the land itself.

As dawn broke, a single leaf, soaked in the tree’s crimson sap, detached and drifted down to kiss her left shoulder blade. Where it touched, it burned into her skin, leaving a perfect, wine-red mark in the shape of the leaf. From that day, every true-born daughter of House Lys has been born with the Mark of the Fallen Leaf. It is:

1. A Sign of the Pact: Proof of the house’s sacred duty as stewards, not just rulers. The mark is said to faintly warm when the holder stands within the ancestral grove.

2. A Mark of Truth: The magic is one of essence, not appearance. It cannot be copied by glamour or artifice. Any attempt replicates the shape but not the unique, living shimmer just beneath the skin, like sap held to light.

3. A Barometer of Legacy: Folklore says the mark darkens to a deep burgundy in times of prosperity and peace, and pales slightly when the land or line is in peril.

The story of the First Daughter and the Weirwood is old—so old it has settled into the dust of forgotten histories. Once a cornerstone of House Lys’s identity, the tale is now a quaint piece of folklore, recited by nursemaids to children or referenced in obscure, crumbling genealogies. The modern world of shifting alliances and steel has little patience for ancient pacts with trees.
