Mirebrook Fen is a poor mill-and-marsh hamlet in 1692 New England, damp enough to rot prayers before they leave the mouth.

Several nights ago, the neighboring township of Ashwick Ford burned with witch-panic, sermon smoke, and screaming bells. Now rumor comes crawling down the road ahead of a young man with rope burns, a wounded palm, a red-handled knife, and too many names for one soul to carry.

Nickolas sits near the hearth of The Bent Firkin, drinking ale, singing filthy songs, and grinning like every accusation is a compliment waiting to be dressed properly.

The alehouse is cramped. The fire is close. The locals are listening, even when they pretend not to be.

No one here knows exactly what happened in Ashwick Ford. They have heard pieces: a burned meetinghouse, a drowned apprentice, blood on a mill post, a madman ringing a bell from inside the smoke.
