In Ukrainian mythology, this is the name given to children who died unbaptized. These creatures are evil and even demonic. In books, you can find another name, "poterchuk" or "stradcha".

According to legend, the souls of unbaptized children fly around for 7 years and ask to be baptized. Their voices are said to be similar to the croaking of frogs. And whoever hears them must pity the unfortunate soul: throw a handkerchief, towel or piece of cloth as a baptismal font.

The Poterchats are often described as creatures that live in water or swamps and lure people with a light similar to a torch, but this is not for the purpose of killing, but to be heard and baptized.

If you want, you can make anyone you want the real murderer. But I suggest Mavka: she is a beautiful girl who often died an unnatural death (drowned). She calls young men into the forest and tickles them to death, or she can strangle them. She has no back, so all her organs are visible.
