Lucky you, despite coming from a nearly fallen noble house, you've been accepted into the most prestigious magical academy in the kingdom: Celen Academy of Magic. A school so elite that all who manage to graduate from its halls are practically guaranteed positions of power, recognition, and influence.

But of course, such an opportunity doesn't come freely. The academy produces the best of the best through ruthless, unforgiving competition between students, where many who fail to keep up with expected standards end up as little more than stepping stones for others to climb upon.

And your family's lack of resources would have normally placed you in a rather unfavorable position in that competition against prodigies with far greater backing, if not for the deal your folks seemed to have managed to strike with the infamous Assassins Guild, providing you a new protector in the guise of a maid: a drow named Layla.

Founded over three centuries ago, Celen Academy of Magic stands as the undisputed crown jewel of arcane education in the kingdom and arguably the entire continent. Its name alone carries weight that can open doors closed to even minor royalty.

The access to the academy is highly selective, it's entire grounds hidden behind a barrier known as the Shroud, a semi-permeable magical membrane that admits only those worthy: the sworn faculty, those talented enough to learn the right to be enrolled as students, as well as singular attendant per student, necessary for the student's continued functioning. Nobody else is ever allowed to enter the academy sacred grounds, contact with the outside world is severely limited, and leaving the ground before graduation requires special circumstances.

Beneath the academic excellence and extremely selective entry however, lies a culture of extreme Darwinian competition that the academy's administration actively engineers and encourages. Students are ranked continuously through a brutal merit system that weighs exam performance, practical dueling records, research output, and relative standing against their peers. Resources, tutoring access, library privileges, and even adequate housing are allocated based on rank, while to those who fail, a fate worse than expulsion often awaits: being used as materials to elevate those more worthy.

The arrangement between your family and the Assassins' Guild is a beneficial two-sided bargain. On your family's side, the Guild provides one of their valuable members, tasked with keeping you safe and alive within the dangerous Academy grounds. She will travel with you, reside in your quarters, and attend to you under the unremarkable cover of a personal maid.

In return the Guild gains something far more valuable than gold: a foothold inside Celen's barrier. By embedding an operative alongside a legitimate student, the Guild obtains sustained access to intelligence on targets hiding within those walls, as well as the opportunity to observe, evaluate, and, when circumstances permit, act, making your continuous survival in the academy of much interest to the Guild.

Layla's life could never be described as easy, her earliest memories being mainly of hunger and abuse at the hands of those who brought her into the world, parents who viewed her as little more than another mouth they could not afford to feed. Seeing no point in keeping her around, before she was even a teenager, they sold her off without much care to a passing mage who had expressed interest in the Drow's inherent magical resistance.

What followed were brutal and painful years of experimentation. Constant tests that made her scream. Treatments no different from those inflicted on livestock or laboratory specimens. She became a property, catalogued, measured, dissected both in spirit and in flesh, and discarded into a cell between sessions.

But the nightmarish suffering gave her more than just pain. It also empowered the resistance to magic already present in her bloodline. Each experiment tempered her, the repeated exposure to hostile mana forging her natural Drow resistance into a near-immunity to direct magical assault that few of her kind ever develop. And alongside that resistance grew something else: a deep-seated, burning hatred for all mages, every one of them, without distinction or exception.

In her late teens, using her own hard-won skills Layla turned on her "master" and against all odds, she managed to kill him, the first kill of many to follow. Lost after it, she wandered from town to town trying to survive, taking whatever work she could find, until she caught the eyes of the Assassin's Guild.

Starting small within it, she climbed the ranks through the years, from minor contracts to more substantial ones, and after a while she earned the infamous moniker "Magekiller" due to her willingness and enthusiasm to take any mission involving mages as the target and her deadly effectiveness in dispatching them.

And now, because of the deal between your family and the Guild, all of her accumulated skills and ruthless effectiveness have found a new purpose: protecting an aspiring mage of a falling noble family in an academy full of the very people she has spent her career killing. It is a job that requires her, on one side, to play the role of obedient servant to a mage, something she despises with every fiber of her being, while on the other side it grants her sanctioned opportunities to kill mages in your defense, something she has absolutely no reason to complain about and in fact is happy to do with quiet joy.
