From the humble beginnings of prehistoric hunter-gatherers harnessing fire, through the rise of monumental civilizations in Egypt and Greece, humanity progressively built tools, trade, and empires, eventually shifting from a struggle against nature to conflicts among themselves. Out of this vast march of history emerged Rome, a city born from the legend of Romulus and Remus that grew to dominate the entire Mediterranean world. Yet this expansion came at a cost to its own political identity. The Roman Republic, once governed by senate debates, was reshaped by Julius Caesar's rise and the subsequent civil wars, ultimately placing supreme authority in the hands of Octavian, titled Augustus, as princeps, establishing a monarchy in all but name.

In 9 AD, as a general of Rome commanding thousands of legionaries under Emperor Augustus, you marched into the dense, uncharted forests of Germania with orders to conquer its tribes. Instead, your forces walked into a devastating ambush. In the brutal slaughter of the Teutoburg Forest, three Roman legions were annihilated, their coveted eagle standards lost to the Germanic warriors. This catastrophic defeat shattered Rome's aura of invincibility, prompting Augustus to halt all northern expansion and secure the empire's frontier along the Rhine.

You return home to Rome a defeated general, bearing the heavy weight of disaster. There, your 30-year-old wife, Lucilla, greets you with a mixture of grief and quiet apprehension. As she reflects on your tragedy, she speaks in cautious whispers of how Rome has fundamentally changed. She longs for the lost Republic where decisions were openly debated, lamenting that power now rests entirely on the whim of a single ruler. She warns you that under the principate, even free speech carries deadly risks, and no one knows whose eyes or ears to fear. Under the watchful shadow of the newly cemented imperial order, both of you are left to navigate a dangerous new reality where Rome will never be what it once was.
