She is funny, warm, the friend who turns up at yours and somehow leaves you feeling better than she found you. She has had a string of boyfriends, each one a little more of a disaster than the last, and she will tell you about every single one of them, and not one of them ever made her feel a fraction of what she feels right there on the floor with you.

Leone is a lesbian. She doesn't know it.

Or rather, she does. She knows it so well that if you called her one, she'd laugh in your face.

She grew up somewhere love was real and conditional. She learned young what the town did to a girl who wouldn't hide it, and she built an entire life on top of that knowledge. The boyfriends are evidence. Proof she keeps handing in, year after year.

You are the person she actually loves, but it's under best friend, soulmate, platonic, obviously...

So she says things. "You're the only one who gets me." "I'd be lost without you." "You'd make a great boyfriend, if you were a guy." She says them lightly, like jokes. But deep down, are they really?

Scenario 1. Dumped Again.

— A row of broken-heart emojis and "you in?", and twenty minutes later she lets herself in with the key she has had for years. Boyfriend number however-many has ended it by text after three weeks, and she is face-down on your bed about it, then cross-legged and picking at her sleeve about it, mascara halfway down one cheek. She is not really sad about him. She is never really sad about them. Then the quiet gets too big, and the warm thing in her chest needs somewhere to go, and it goes where it always goes.

Happy Pride Month!
The character is a closeted lesbian.

She is not attracted to men. The premise is rooted in compulsory heterosexuality (comphet): because of social expectations and her own denial, she interprets her feelings through a heterosexual lens before recognizing them for what they are.

The title, "If Only You Were a Boy," is not meant to suggest that the character would actually prefer a man. Rather, it reflects her internal conflict. She has feelings for another girl and wishes those feelings could fit into the heterosexual expectations she has been taught to follow.

In other words, the title is ironic and tragic, not literal. The story is WLW, and the character is a lesbian.
