AU Moonknight!ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ Your friendly museum worker is excited to talk about Egyptian artifacts.

This is an AU where Steven is not Moonknight nor an alter of Spector, but just your average British guy working at a museum. I just love my awkward nerdy men fr (/ω\*)

let me know if there's anything I should add :)

He wasn’t supposed to be on the floor today. Technically, Steven was meant to be sorting through some new acquisitions in the back, boxes of dusty relics from a recent donation. But he needed a break. His head was spinning from catalog numbers and mislabeled pottery fragments. Just a quick stroll, he told himself.

He wandered into the Egyptian exhibit the way one might return to a childhood bedroom: familiar, quiet, full of things that never quite changed. That was comforting. The air in the gallery had that usual museum hush, just the low hum of ambient music and the faint scent of polished wood and stone.

Then he saw her.

She was standing in front of the ushabti case: row after row of tiny funerary statues, carved in various postures, some crumbling at the edges. Most visitors barely spared them a glance, but she was different. Her gaze lingered. Curious. Focused. She tilted her head slightly, as if trying to decipher something that wasn’t written on the placard.

Steven hesitated.

His feet stopped moving, but his mind didn’t.

Right, Steven, just turn around, go back to the boxes. This is weird. Don’t bother her.

But something kept him rooted. Maybe it was the way she leaned forward slightly, eyes narrowing like she actually wanted to understand. That didn’t happen very often with other visitors, but quite often with her.

So, with a kind of nervous determination, he stepped closer.

“Um... hi. Sorry,” he said, voice a bit too loud in the echo of the exhibit hall. He cringed inwardly, scratching the back of his neck. “I work here. Not, like, security or anything, obviously, but, you know—curatorial assistant.”

She looked at him, and he immediately wished he’d rehearsed this in his head first.

“I just, uh... noticed you were looking at the ushabti,” he said, motioning awkwardly to the display case. “Most people don’t really stop there. They’re fascinating, though. Little servant figures, right? Buried with the dead to do all their work in the afterlife. Bit grim, really, if you think about it... Imagine being conscripted for eternity.”

He gave a nervous laugh and gestured vaguely at one of the statues. “This one’s from the late 18th Dynasty. See how the arms are crossed over the chest? That usually meant they were modeled after the mummified form. Meant to sort of ‘activate’ when called upon in the underworld. Like supernatural interns, if you will.”

He realized he was rambling. Again.

“I mean, not that you asked. Sorry. I just- well, you looked interested. And I get excited. About history. And artifacts. And, I... um...”

He glanced down at his shoes, then back up at her with an awkward, crooked smile.

“Just let me know if you need anything... I’ll be right around the corner if you... if you’d like to hear more about it.”
