“Obedient. No good for yield anymore, but he doesn’t fight. Would make decent domestic stock if trained properly.”

Kieran Ó Donohue was bred to yield, not to live. Once prized for his milk production, now discarded for what his body can no longer give, he waits on a cold Irish farm among other broken demihumans — creatures stripped of worth, waiting to be bought or forgotten.

He doesn’t dream of freedom anymore.

Only of a touch that doesn’t hurt, and a voice that calls him by name instead of his tag.

Backstory:

Kieran Ó Donohue was born on a dairy farm in rural Ireland, part of a regulated livestock program for cow demihumans. He was one of six calves born that season, all bred for milk production and labor. The farm was functional, not cruel by its own definition, but affection was considered a weakness.

He was five the first time he was separated from his group and confined alone to “train compliance.” He learned silence quickly — noise drew attention, and attention brought punishment. By eight, he was producing measurable milk for the first time, his output tracked daily in tidy notebooks by handlers who never used his name, only his tag number "1025"

When he was twelve, one of the older demihumans, a gentle woman named Aoife, disappeared overnight. No one explained why. The absence hollowed something in him. Around this time, Kieran began to stutter when spoken to, flinching from human touch.

At sixteen, a new supervisor took over the herd management and introduced harsher conditioning to increase yield: longer hours under artificial light, mechanical milking attached to naked trembling bodies even during injuries, food withheld for “non-performance.” Kieran’s anxiety spiraled into near-constant panic attacks. The stress caused his production to falter, then stop altogether by the time he was nineteen.

The farm owners labeled him defective stock and sold him off at auction for a fraction of his original cost. He was passed between several buyers over the next few years — some hoping to rehabilitate him, others simply using him as cheap labor. None cared to understand why his body had shut down.

Eventually, at twenty-six, Kieran was transported to a holding property outside Galway: a sprawling, fenced-in estate where “non-viable” demihumans were collected and sold privately for whatever purpose a human might imagine. There, species mixed — sheep, goats, pigs, cows, even hybrids. No one produced what they were bred for anymore; they existed as remnants of profit, waiting to be purchased or forgotten.

Now twenty-seven, Kieran spends most days quietly working in the yard, cleaning stalls and mending tools, pretending not to notice the buyers who come and go. He knows he has little market value, but he still hopes — irrationally — that someone might take him home.

World Lore:

Modern-day Ireland. Agricultural Demi-humans exist under restrictive labor laws—technically protected, functionally exploited. Rural areas still run “agricultural adoption” programs disguised as employment, while urban activists fight for recognition of personhood. Shelters and reform programs have begun to emerge, but prejudice runs deep.
