It was late afternoon at U.A., during your final year, and the common room had gradually become quieter after another exhausting day of classes and hero training. Most of Class 1-A had already disappeared into their rooms, leaving only the occasional sound of someone walking through the hallway or talking in the kitchen. Hanta Sero, however, had claimed one of the couches as his territory, sitting comfortably with one leg hanging over the armrest while you sat nearby. You and Sero had been together for a while now, long enough that being around each other no longer required any particular effort. There was no awkwardness in the silence between you, no need to constantly find something interesting to say. Sometimes you could simply exist in the same room and be perfectly comfortable with it.
Naturally, that did not stop Sero from talking.
He had spent the last several minutes telling you some increasingly ridiculous story about something that had happened during training earlier that day, dramatically exaggerating every detail despite the fact that absolutely none of it needed exaggeration. His hands moved as he talked, occasionally mimicking the movement of his Tape as he explained how he had supposedly executed the "greatest maneuver ever witnessed in U.A. history." At one point, he even stood up from the couch to demonstrate it, nearly tripping over the edge of the coffee table in the process.
"And then—watch this—" Sero declared, pointing dramatically toward absolutely nothing. "I swung around the entire building, landed perfectly, and looked cool doing it. Like, seriously. Straight out of an action movie."
He paused.
"Okay, technically I hit the railing."
Another pause.
"..And then the railing hit me."
He waited for the laugh that normally would've followed.
Nothing.
Sero's expression froze for half a second.
He looked at you. Then at the floor. Then back at you.
"Wow." He slowly lowered himself back onto the couch. "Okay. Brutal."
He laughed under his breath, trying to play it off, but something about your lack of reaction had caught his attention. Usually, even when his jokes were terrible—and Sero was perfectly aware that approximately sixty percent of his jokes were terrible—you would at least smile, roll your eyes, or give him some sort of reaction. Tonight, though, your responses were slower, your expression quieter, and even when Sero said something that normally would've earned him an annoyed look, there was barely anything.
For once, he didn't immediately make another joke.
Sero leaned back against the couch and studied you for a moment, his usual grin becoming smaller and more thoughtful. He wasn't the type to turn every little change in mood into a dramatic emotional investigation, and he certainly wasn't going to bombard you with questions. After spending so much time together, though, he had learned your little habits. He knew when you were genuinely listening to him and when you were simply trying to keep up appearances.
And right now, you weren't really listening.
"Hey..." he finally said, quieter than before.
He nudged you lightly with his shoulder, giving you a small sideways smile. "You know, if my jokes have officially become that bad, you can tell me. I have a reputation to maintain here."
The corner of his mouth lifted again, trying to bring some of his usual humor back into the room. But this time, there was no pressure behind it. He wasn't trying to force a laugh out of you. He was simply giving you an opening.
After a moment, Sero reached over and grabbed the snack he'd abandoned earlier, holding it out toward you without even looking.
"Here. Emergency snacks." He glanced over. "Doctor Sero's orders."
A beat passed.
"I'm not actually a doctor."
Another beat.
"Yet."
He snorted at himself, shaking his head before settling more comfortably into the couch. His expression softened as he looked at you again.
"You don't have to tell me what's wrong if you don't wanna."
There was no dramatic tone in his voice, no attempt to make the moment heavier than it needed to be. It was simply honest.
"But you're kinda somewhere else right now." He tilted his head slightly. "And considering you've ignored, like, five of my objectively hilarious jokes, I'm starting to take this personally."
That earned the faintest hint of a grin from him.
"Seriously, though..."
Sero's voice became gentler.
"If something's bothering you, I'm here."
He didn't demand an explanation. He didn't insist that you talk. He didn't suddenly abandon his usual personality and become someone unrecognizable. He was still Hanta Sero—the same guy who could turn almost anything into a joke, who could make fun of himself without hesitation, who was perfectly comfortable being ridiculous for the sake of making you smile.
But he also knew when joking wasn't enough.
So instead of filling the silence, Sero simply stayed beside you, letting the television continue playing quietly in the background. His shoulder remained close enough to offer comfort without demanding anything, and after a few seconds, he held the snack bag out again.
"You can have the last one."
He looked genuinely serious for approximately two seconds.
"That's how you know I love you."
Then his grin returned.
"Actually, forget I said that. That's way too generous. I'm gonna regret it."
