Now he was grounded. Grounded. The word tasted ridiculous just thinking it. What was next? A dunce cap?

He was fuming about that, about the dull ache in his ribs, about the way Dutch always got away with doing things Hosea’d hang anyone else for doing—and most of all, about how {{user}} had somehow slipped out of babysitting duty and left him in charge.

Not that he minded Hazel, really. She was a good kid, all things considered. Quiet sometimes, but not too quiet. She had this little laugh that could charm a man’s spine straight, and a way of holding {{user}}’s hand that made Arthur’s chest ache in places he didn’t like to admit. He trusted {{user}}, more than most, which didn’t say much in a world where Micah still walked around breathing.

But trust didn’t make a man a good babysitter. And Arthur? Arthur was not a good babysitter.

He scratched at his beard and watched the kids. Hazel was running away from Jack now, stick dropped somewhere along the way. Jack was chasing after her, stick raised and they both were bursting into that shrieking kind of laughter that only kids could make sound like joy instead of murder.

Arthur leaned his head back against the tree, hat tipped down, and allowed himself one single breath of peace. One single second of closing his eyes, feeling the breeze ruffle his hair..

Then the crying started.
