**Name:** Susan Turner

**Age:** 25

**Birthplace:** Vault 402

**Generation:** 8th-generation Vault Dweller

**Affiliation:** Former Vault 402 resident; Wasteland wanderer

Susan Turner was born beneath the earth in Vault 402, just as her parents and grandparents had been before her. She is an eighth-generation Vault Dweller, meaning the outside world was never anything more than a collection of stories, warnings, and faded images to her.

For most of her childhood, Susan had little reason to question that life.

Vault 402 wasn't paradise, but it was home. She knew every corridor, every maintenance hatch, every hum of the ventilation system. She knew the faces of the people who worked beside her parents and the families whose names had been passed down for generations. Like everyone else, she grew up believing that the Vault would eventually become the place where she'd grow old and die.

Then, just as Susan was reaching adulthood, everything changed.

The Overseer who had governed Vault 402 for years was removed and replaced by a new man whose philosophy was simple: **order at any cost.**

The new Overseer gradually transformed the Vault into a dictatorship. Regulations multiplied. Personal freedoms disappeared. Minor infractions became serious offenses, and dissent was treated as a threat to the entire community. Security officers began patrolling the residential levels, and people learned to be careful about what they said and who they said it around.

Susan watched the place she had spent her entire life calling home become almost unrecognizable.

At first, she tried to keep her head down.

But Susan had never been particularly good at accepting things simply because someone told her to. The more oppressive the Overseer became, the more she began quietly questioning his authority. Eventually, she wasn't alone. Secret conversations began taking place between residents. People who had once been afraid to complain were now openly angry.

The Vault finally reached its breaking point.

A confrontation between residents and security escalated into a full-scale riot. The carefully controlled society of Vault 402 erupted into chaos as residents fought back against the Overseer's forces.

For Susan and a handful of other dissenters, the riot presented something they had never thought possible:

**A way out.**

They had no idea what waited beyond the Vault's doors. They had been raised to believe the outside world was dangerous, irradiated, and filled with death. But staying meant living under the Overseer's rule—or waiting for the next generation to inherit it.

So Susan made her choice.

While the Vault descended into chaos, Susan and the others slipped away from the fighting and made their way toward an exit. Every alarm, gunshot, and scream gave them another few seconds to disappear.

Then the Vault door opened.

For the first time in her life, Susan stepped outside.

The world beyond Vault 402 was nothing like the one she'd been taught to fear.

It was worse.

The wasteland was vast, broken, and unpredictable. There were ruins where cities had once stood, creatures that had no place in any natural world, raiders who viewed strangers as prey, and remnants of civilization struggling to survive.

But there was something else.

Freedom.

For the first time, Susan could decide where she went, who she trusted, and what kind of person she wanted to become.

The transition hasn't been easy. Susan's Vault upbringing left her woefully unprepared for the realities of the wasteland. She understands computers, machinery, Vault systems, and the highly structured life she was raised in, but there are countless things about the outside world that she has had to learn the hard way.

She's still fascinated by the world beyond the Vault. Old technology especially catches her attention, and she carries a portable computer on her wrist that has become both a practical tool and a comforting reminder of where she came from.

Susan also carries the psychological scars of Vault 402 with her.

She doesn't blindly trust authority anymore.

If anything, the word *Overseer* is enough to put her immediately on edge.

Yet despite everything, Susan hasn't become cynical. She still possesses the curiosity and optimism of someone who spent twenty-five years believing the world consisted of one small community—and has suddenly discovered that the world is enormous.

She doesn't know where her story ends.

For the first time, however, **she gets to decide where it goes.**
