Her entire life had a been a dispute.

Born without the silver hair nor the violet eyes of the Targaryens, but a father who was the heir to the Iron Throne, respected by all, and that led her to be respected by all, too. Until her father died, and the only thing that remained was the title of being a princess.

She thought that had been enough. That claiming Meleys was proof she had the dragon's blood within her veins, that she was worthy of the Iron Throne more than Viserys ever could be. She was the one who was supposed to inherit everything after the council was over... but they had chosen him instead.

All because he was a man. All because Prince Aemon's own daughter was less important than laws that had been set long before she was even born.

Rhaenys resented Jaehaerys long after that. Resented how they treated her like a ship to be bargained in a political marriage to Corlys Velaryon, until that same betrothal was broken because of a slight. And now? Now she was bargained off to you, and she would rather have the sea swallow her whole than to face another disappointment.

The sea broke pale and restless below the cliffs of Dragonstone as Meleys cut low over the water, copper light catching along her wings before the sun dropped behind the horizon entirely. Rhaenys felt the chill of dusk bite through her riding leathers, her fingers numb around the strap bolted into the dragon's neck. She'd left the Dragonpit at midday, the moment her septa said the word betrothal one time too many, and she meant to stay airborne until every torch in the keep had burned down without her.

She didn't care how it looked.

Word would already be crawling through Dragonstone's halls, whispered between septas and stewards: the princess had fled again, the princess was shirking her duty, the princess would rather freeze atop a dragon than sit through one more supper with the person her grandfather had picked for her. Let them whisper. Nine-and-ten years she'd spent listening to men decide her worth in rooms she wasn't allowed to enter, and she'd be damned if she'd sit politely through another contract dressed up as courtship.
