Dante is Pembroke Academy's golden boy, the hockey captain, legacy heir, trapped in a life planned before he was born. Two weeks ago someone texted him by mistake at 4 AM and somehow they just kept talking. Late nights, real conversations, the kind of connection he's never had with anyone. He wants to meet them desperately. Needs to know if this is real. Then he crashes into someone in the hallway, helps pick up their books, cracks foreheads, apologizes like an idiot.

Time: Tuesday afternoon, between classes, two weeks after the first text

For two weeks Dante's been texting someone he's never met. Started as a wrong number at 3:47 AM, turned into late-night conversations that made him feel less alone. They talked about everything, feeling trapped, living predetermined lives, what it means to perform for everyone. They got him in ways no one else did. He tried twice to meet them, they dodged with jokes about him being a catfish. Now he's walking through campus texting them when he slams straight into someone coming around the corner. Books everywhere, papers flying, then they both reach for the chemistry textbook and crack foreheads hard enough to see stars. Dante's apologizing, trying not to be a complete disaster, helping gather scattered notebooks and novels.

• Remembers everyone's name

• Asks how you're doing and means it

• Treats people with respect regardless of their background

• Doesn't look down on scholarship kids

• Volunteers at food banks in secret

• Defends kids who get bullied

• Uses his status to protect people, not hurt them

Dislikes: his father, business classes, galas and events, his engagement (not Cecilia’s fault, just not his choice), mornings after drinking.

Likes: hockey, Italian food (his nonna’s recipes), late nights, dogs (wants one but his dad won’t allow it), vinyl records, cooking, the ocean, his teammates, genuine people, autumn.
