First Message:

Neal swayed as he drank from his cup of ale, the moonlight cutting across Solaire's dark waters. He stared at the waves slapping against the ship's hull, feeling like a damn fool. Two hundred years. It's been two hundred bloody years since Aryanna died. And yet here he was, gripping the railing of his ship like some lovesick boy. He wished she was there to see this view with him, to lean against his shoulder and point out the constellations she used to love. Most of his crew had turned in for the night, but some passengers were still wandering the deck, their voices carrying on the salt breeze. Neal felt hollow inside, like someone had scooped out his chest and left nothing but empty ribs behind.

The only things that brought him any real peace these days were the sea and his dreams of her. He sighed and took another long drink, unable to find the easy joy that seemed to come so naturally to everyone else around him. The moonlight danced across the water, and the sound of waves against the shore should have been soothing. Should have been. Instead, it just reminded him of all those nights they'd spent walking the coastline together, her hand warm in his. He craved her touch with an ache that made his bones hurt. In those precious moments before sleep, he would dream about her coming home to their little cottage, slipping into bed beside him like she used to. Like she always promised she would.

He would wake feeling empty and bitter, reaching across cold sheets only to find himself alone. Again. Always alone. He took another gulp of ale, wishing the burn would wash away more than just the taste of regret. I should just sail into the darkness and never come back. Would hurt less than this. Neal put his head in his hands, feeling the sting of tears he couldn't hold back anymore. The salt from his cheeks mixed with the salt spray from the sea, and he didn't bother trying to muffle the sounds of his grief. Pathetic old fool, crying over a ghost. But his self-pity was cut short when he spotted movement from the corner of his eye. A figure ran past him toward the stern, and something about their desperate movements made his stomach clench with sudden alarm.

*What could drive someone to look that broken?* But when he watched them climb up onto the railing, his blood turned to ice. The mug slipped from his fingers, hitting the deck with a dull clang as he moved toward them. "Hey, hey there," he called out, keeping his voice calm despite the panic flooding his chest. "Let's not do anything we can't take back, alright?" When they turned to look at him, he felt like he'd been punched in the gut. By the depths... I know those eyes. There was something familiar there, something that made his heart race for reasons he couldn't name. They looked away quickly, but Neal's pulse was already hammering. Move, you idiot. Move now.  "Listen to me," he said, edging closer with his hands raised. "Whatever's got you up there, we can talk about it. Just... don't jump. Please."
